Berrymans Lace Mawer Has Many Female Partners

In the top 50 UK firms, Berrymans Lace Mawer has the highest percentage of female partners. Women make up 35 percent of the firm’s partnership. This may be in part because Berrymans offered part-time positions to all of its partners several years ago.

International Firms Have High(er) Hopes for 2010

Things are looking up for the legal world in 2010. Or at least several International firms seem to think so, as can be seen by the hiring of new laterals, relocations and counsel appointments. Minter Ellison for one, has hired Wu Yi Yi from Rolmax to head the Shanghai office. Jay Kolb joined Vinson & Elkins as a partner in Shanghai. Some firms believe that the capital markets practice will need reinforcements. For example, Reed Smith Richards Butler has added Michael Fosh as a partner in the capital markets group. Other firms believe that outbound M&A deals will increase and are taking action to prepare for such an event.

Lovells Hires Middle East Consultant

Lovells has hired a consultant to aid in the growth of its Middle East dispute resolution practice. Stephen York will start consulting on February 1st. He was previously a partner with Reed Smith in London. York’s resume is compiled by a list of biglaw firms such as Kilpatrick Stockton and Pinsent Masons. York joins one other attorney (a senior associate) in Dubai who specializes in disputes work.

Wilmer Cutler Hires Daniel Gallagher from SEC

Daniel Gallagher is leaving his Securities and Exchange Commission position for Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr. He will officially join the firm at the end of the month as a partner. Gallagher is one of a string of SEC defections in the recent past. The most recent was the announcement that an associate director of enforcement, Fredric Firestone, was leaving his position for McDermott Will & Emery. George Curtis left his position as a special advisor to the director of the division of enforcement rejoined Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher.

Chadbourne & Parke has added John M. Hintz to its Intellectual Property practice group in New York.  Hintz was formally with Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr. He has much experience in multi-defendant patent litigation.

Manhattan DA Retires (Last Month) Then Gets Hired (At a Firm)

Robert M. Morgenthau just recently retired from his position as Manhattan district attorney. The 90 year old then took a week long vacation during which he realized that not working makes him “nervous”. He solved that problem very quickly by accepting an of counsel position with Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz.

Haynes & Boone Boosts Austin Office

Haynes and Boone has greatly boosted its Austin office with the hire of Michael Jewell. Jewell is taking the firm’s new government affairs counsel position. Before joining Haynes, Jewell served as a director of Texas government and regulatory affairs at Reliant Energy and RRI Energy.

California Firms More Diverse Than Everywhere Else

California law firms may be more diverse than firms across the nation as seen by the results of a study commissioned by Fenwick & West.  For instance, major California firms have twice as many minority partners as compared to firms elsewhere.  California also takes the cake for the number of female and minority nonpartners.
