Allen & Overy Offers Part-Time to Partners

Allen & Overy has introduced a new benefit:  equity partners are now given the opportunity to work part-time in hopes of keeping more its female employees.  The particulars:  partners can work as little as four days a week or have as much as 52 extra days off a year.  Arrangements must be made with department managers.

Law Firm Jobs Aren’t So Bad After All

Despite the long hours and fear of being laid off, the annual Fortune survey declares six BigLaw firms as some of the best places to work.  The annual survey rates the 100 best companies to work for based on a survey given to a sample of employees and a series of questions given to the company.  The following six firms made it on the list: Bingham McCutchen – #12, Alston & Bird – #30, Arnold & Porter – #65, Perkins Coie – #75, Baker Donelson – #77, and Orrick – #95.

Cadwalader Increases Profits Per Partner By Losing Many A Partner

Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft has had its profits per partner increase by 28 percent. This increase is due to the firm loosing 21 percent of its equity partners. In fact, Cadwalader’s total revenue was 10 percent lower than the year before. In 2009, the firm made a gross revenue of $456.5 million, exactly 9.78 percent less than 2008’s gross revenue.

Ogletree Launches in Las Vegas

Ogletree, Deakins, Nash, Smoak & Stewart has a new addition: an office in Las Vegas. This latest office makes Ogletree’s 36th office. There is a possibility that the firm will open two new offices next in Denver and the Pacific Northwest.

Seyfarth Shaw Makes Cuts

Seyfarth Shaw has just laid off 40 people. About 20 attorneys and 20 staff have taken the blow. The firm sent out an memorandum basically explaining that the layoffs are due to the economy and its affect on the legal world.

Law Firms Focusing on Asia

Law firms, such as CMS Cameron McKenna, Latham & Watkins and Shearman & Sterling, are expanding in China. Camerons plans on launching a new office in China this year. Latham & Watkins is in the midst of opening its office in Beijing. Shearman has recently boosted its Hong Kong office with two lateral partner hires from O’Melveny & Myers. Colin Law and Peter Chen have jumped the O’Melveny ship.

BigLaw Donates to the Cause in Haiti

BigLaw is stepping up to the plate with major donations to aid Haiti in the aftermath of the earthquake. Paul Hastings donated $100,000 to Doctors Without Borders. Skadden Arps not only donated the same amount to various relief organizations but is also matching all of its employees donations up to $500. Kirkland & Ellis gave $100,000 to two organizations: The American Red Cross and the Grace House of Hope for Girls, an orphanage in Haiti. For an updated list of BigLaw donations click link below.
