Bingham McCutchen’s New Hong Kong Office
Boston firm Bingham McCutchen is set to open a Hong Kong office this January. This office will focus on advising existing financial-institution clients in Asia. The Hong Kong opening comes after Bingham’s merger with Swidler Berlin of D.C., and after Bingham’s Jay Zimmermann stated that the firm hopes to expand its international operation. After completing six mergers, Zimmerman has morphed this firm into a national powerhouse.

Lateral Moves for CA Lawyers
The California firm Rosen, Bien, & Asaro is now Rosen, Bien, & Galvan after the loss of partner Andrea Asaro and the appointment of new name partner Ernest Galvan. The firm has also relocated to new offices on the 10th floor of 315 Montgomery St. and gained four associates specializing in public interest and private sector litigation. Galvan, a graduate of Yale Law School, has been with the firm since 1998 and handles general and complex civil litigation, emphasizing civil rights, employment and attorneys fee cases.

Buffalo & Birmingham Firms’ New NY Offices
Hodgson Russ of Buffalo and Birmingham’s Whatley Drake & Kallas are opening new offices in New York. For Whatley Drake & Kallas, fifteen attorneys now call the 37th floor of 1540 Broadway home; Hodgson Russ has 31 lawyers in their 24th floor office. Drawn to the tower for its views of Time Square, both firms have 10 year leases on their new spaces.

Lateral Move for High-Profile Litigator
DeMaurice Smith, a litigator from the D.C. office of Latham & Watkins, made a move to Patton Boggs last week. Smith was formerly a prosecutor and a counsel, but at this firm he says he’ll focus on white-collar criminal defense matters and tort liability trials. Other Latham lawyers have moved to Patton Boggs this year; in April 30 litigators from Latham’s Newark office joined the team.

NY Office Bolstered by Boutique Acquisition
Crowell & Moring of Washington D.C. has added the boutique firm King Pagano Harrison and ten partners from the intellectual property boutique Morgan & Finnegan to its New York office. The office opened in September with only two partners, so the moves increase the total number of New York lawyers for Crowell & Moring to 15. Nationwide, Crowell & Moring has around 300 lawyers.

Drinker Biddle and Gardner Merge
After months of discussion and planning, Philadelphia-based Drinker Biddle & Reath and Chicago-based Gardner Carton & Douglas have recently announced that the two firms will merge. Taking effect on Jan. 1, 2007, this merger will create a firm with 651 lawyers and 26 other professionals across 12 offices. After the combination, the firm will have offices in three of the five biggest markets for bankruptcy filings: New York, Delaware and Chicago, and will have a combined gross revenue of about $350 million.

New Partners in NY Firms
Several firms in New York have recently acquired new partners and/or promoted associates to partner. Paul M. Kaplan, an antitrust counselor and litigator, has joined Bryan Cave as a partner, two criminal defense attorneys from Buchanan Ingersoll joined Carter Ledyard & Milburn as partners. Four lawyers at Morrison Cohen will be promoted on Jan. 1, and at Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal, Denise Tormey was named managing partner in NY.

Philadelphia Firm Adds New Laterals
On Monday November 6, John A. Nixon and Michael E. Bleier will move to Wolf Block Schorr & Solis-Cohen’s Philadelphia offices, concluding decades of work at their respective former employers. Nixon leaves Blank Rome after 13 years, and Bleier comes from 25 years at Mellon Financial Corp. There has been other lateral hiring recently in Philadelphia including Brian Guthrie’s move to Saul Ewing and Majorie Jacobs new job at Duane Morris.
