Former Bank and SEC Official Joins Latham & Watkins as Partner in New York

Latham & Watkins LLP1 is pleased to announce that Sandeep Savla has joined the firm’s New York office as a partner in the Litigation Department. His practice focuses on civil litigation involving financial institutions, as well as white collar investigations and regulatory enforcement matters as a member of the firm’s Financial Institutions Industry Group. He has practice experience in both the United States and the United Kingdom.

With more than 20 years of experience in government, private practice and in-house, Savla has a strong track record in complex investigations and litigation involving US and non-US authorities as well as the representation of preeminent financial institutions in litigating commercial disputes. He joins Latham from Crédit Agricole Corporate and Investment Bank, where he served as Managing Director and Counsel, and Head of Litigation for the Americas. In this capacity, he supervised a docket of commercial litigation, responded to regulatory inquiries and appeared in court and before government agencies. Earlier in his career, Savla served as Senior Counsel in the Enforcement Division of the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and was a barrister in the UK.

Michèle Penzer, Office Managing Partner of Latham & Watkins in New York, said: “Sandeep’s unique mix of experience is particularly well-suited to our clients in the financial industry, and complements an incredible white collar and securities litigation team in one of the world’s major financial centers, within the US and globally. I’m pleased to welcome Sandeep to the firm.”

Miles Ruthberg, Chair of the Litigation Department in New York, added: “With his dual experience in US and UK law, Sandeep provides a breadth of knowledge that is of critical importance to clients in an interconnected global economy. He joins a practice that has been at the forefront of white collar defense and adds to the list of experienced, former government officials who have joined the firm in the past two years, including Larry Buterman, Kevin Chambers, Michael Fee, Benjamin Naftalis, Kathy Ruemmler, Melissa Arbus Sherry, John Sikora and Jonathan Su.”

“Sandeep has unique experience and skills, in particular in cross-border regulatory matters and enforcement actions in the financial services sector. His judgment, sharp instinct and deep understanding of the financial institutions industry distinguishes him, and makes him a great asset for our clients,” added Christopher Clark, a litigation partner in the New York office and global Co-chair of Latham & Watkins’ Financial Institutions Industry Group.

“I’m delighted to be a part of a thriving litigation practice in New York, and look forward to working alongside some of the leading white collar practitioners in the field. I also look forward to building and growing my practice by connecting clients with Latham’s culture, global platform, and deep roots in the financial community,” said Savla.

Savla received his master’s degree in law from Stanford Law School in 2001 and his law degree at Oxford University in 1991. Savla has previously worked at Crédit Agricole since 2009. He was formerly in private practice from 2004-2009, at the SEC from 2001-2004, and a barrister from 1994 to 2000. In addition to his US experience, he intends to reactivate his professional registration as a barrister so that he will again be able to offer legal services in UK law.
