Baker McKenzie Profits per Partner Reaches $1 Million

Baker & McKenzie announced on Wednesday that their profits per partner has reached the $1 million mark. This marks a 22% increase since last year, and a 20% increase in overall revenue. Baker & McKenzie, the world's biggest law firm, is based out of Chicago and attributes these increases to a focus on expansion of global offices in order to attract multinational clients.

IP Heavyweight Joins Cadwalader

Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft has hired Christopher Hughes from intellectual property speciality firm, Morgan & Finnegan. Hughes joins the New York office as the head of the IP group and as a member of the litigation department. He has over 30 years of experience in complex patent, trade secret and trademark litigation, as well as licensing and intellectual property counseling. Hughes' practice covers the U.S. and abroad, and deals with a variety of industries including computers and software, consumer products and industrial equipment, e-commerce and financial service matters, and mechanical and medical devices. Founded in 1792, Cadwalader is a AmLaw Top 50 firm with offices in New York, London, Charlotte, Washington and Beijing.

Clifford Chance Snags Litigation Trio from Sidley Austin

Magic cicle firm, Clifford Chance, has recruited three litigation partners from Sidley Austin to join its Washington, D.C. office. Juan Morillo, Stephen Nickelsburg and Steven Coltreau are white-collar and criminal defense attorneys who also have extensive experience in civil practice. In addition to the trio, Clifford Chance added another partner, Wendy Wysong. Wysong was previously a senior lawyer with the US government's Bureau of Industry and Security.

Banking Partner Joins Mayer Brown, London

Michael Pabst has left Mayer Brown Rowe & Maw to join Jones Day's London office as a partner. He joins the firm's banking and finance group, headed by Ed Nalbantian. Pabst's work focuses on acquisition, projects and emerging markets financing and restructurings in addition to structured derivatives finance in the context of tax-related asset and commodities deals.

New Foreign Investment Policy Increases Interest in US Attorneys

President Bush signed the Foreign Investment and National Security Act on July 26, causing a scramble in New York and other major US cities for investment attorneys familiar with the new code. The new law came into being due to ever-increasing security concerns and as a response to a 2006 controversy involving DP World's acquisition of a British port operator which owns several US ports. Attorneys familiar with the new law say it confirms the government's changing attitude towards foreign investments in security sensitive areas.

Bingham Partner to Set Up Human Rights Boutique

Neil Micklethwaite, a litigation partner at Bingham McCutchen, has left his firm to open a human rights litigation boutique with his friend and former colleague Roger Gherson. This moves raises some questions about Bingham McCutchen; what was a human rights attorney doing at a financial law firm? It seems Micklethwaite was a financial attorney at Bingham McCutchen, but his heart just wasn't in it. A source at Bingham McCutchen didn't seem that upset to see Micklethwaite go, and said that he's much better off elsewhere.

Garfinkely, a litigator who specializes in entertainment and property law, represents entertainment companies such as William Morris Agency Inc. and International Creative Management Inc.. Previously, Garfinkely has worked for Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman with Douglas Emhoff, partner-in-charge of Venable's Los Angeles office. In 2005, Garfinkely represent the author of the book upon which the film "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" was based in a suit against Walt Disney Co. concerning gross receipts.

ABA Urges Law Firms to Discard Mandatory Retirement Policies

In Monday's meeting of the American Bar Association's House of Delegates, the 413,000-member organization agreed that law firms should rethink their mandatory retirement policies. These sorts of policies violate age discrimination laws in place in most every other workplace. The ABA recommends that instead of age-determined retirement policies, firms should consider senior partners' performance levels when evaluating their future with the firm. According to a 2005 study, 57 percent of law firms with 100 or more attorneys have a mandatory retirement age, which usually ranges from 65 to 75.

IP Lateral Attorney Hired by Sutherland

David Wigley has joined Sutherland Asbill & Brennan's Atlanta office. The IP attorney joins as Counsel resident, and will focus his practice on securing, maintaining and enforcing intellectual property rights for domestic and foreign companies. Wigley has a Ph.D. in Chemistry, and he has done work in the life scienes, chemical, and pharmaceutical sectors. Sutherland now has 49 IP attorneys, 26 of whom are members of the Patent Bar, and 6 of whom have Ph.Ds.

Manatt Phelps Opens San Fransisco Office

The new office houses 12 attorney and six professionals who previously worked for Manatt Health Solutions in Palo Alto and Los Angeles. Building Boom Causes Boston Hiring Frenzy

Due to recent increase in Boston's commercial and development market, area firms are enlarging their real estate practices. Firms such as Goulston & Storrs, Goodwin Procter, and Mintz, LEvin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo are among those clamoring for new real estate associates. The Boston branch of national firm DLA Piper has nearly doubled its real estate attorneys since 2003. Currently there are 75 large ongoing building projects with a total value of $3.3 billion.

Ogletree Opens Two New Midwest Offices

Ogletree, Deakins, Nash, Smoak & Stewart has opened an office in St. Louis and has plans to open a new office in Detroit September 1st. The St. Louis branch will be headed by Gregg M. Lamley of Bryan Cave, and Tim A. Garnett of Kinder Morgan. After August 20th they will be joined by Heidi Kuns Durr, also of Bryan Cave. The St. Louis office is the only national labor/employment firm in the city, an opportunity too good for Ogletree to pass up. Ogletree has 30 additional offices in the US.

A group of five bankruptcy attornies is moving to Vinson & Elkins from a boutique founded by former partners of Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz. The attorneys--Dennis F. Cronin, Jane Vris, Dov Kleiner, Laurence Cherkis and J. Ronald Trost--are all nationally known bankruptcy attorneys. Cronin & Vris represented Vinson & Elkins during the Enron Corp. debacle, as Vinson & Elkins were outside counsel for the company. This move is part of a trend among top firms expanding their bankruptcy practices in anticipation of increased filings.

McKee Nelson Highest Paying Firm in DC

McKee Nelson's Washington DC office is now the highest paying law firm in Washington, according to several sources. The young firm has grown exponentially since its foundation nearly a decade ago, and yet its 210 lawyers make more money than anyone else in the city, with revenue per lawyer over a million dollars a year and profit per partner at $1.7 million yearly. Reed Auerbach, the managing partner of McKee Nelson's New York office, attributes this to the amount of power the firm gives their partners. Additionally, the company has been very focused in its acquisition of new clients.

CC hires London Partner from Jones Day

Clifford Chance has hired Greg Olsen for its London office. Olsen was previously a senior competition partner at Jones Day for six years, and he headed the City competition team there. Before his time at Jones Day, Olsen was an associate at CC. Olsen specializes in European Union and UK competition law as well as banking and finance practices.

O'Melveny Appoints First Asia M&A Head

O'Melveny & Meyers has named partner Gregory Puff to head the firm's Asian mergers & acquisitions practice in Hong Kong. Previously, Puff worked in O'Melveny's Tokyo office. Previously the duties of the head Asian M&A partner were handled jointly by Asia practice head Howard Chia and Michael Moser, the co-chair of the China office. This structure change came about because of an increase in Asian transactions.
 
Hunton & Williams Hires Tax Partner

Hunton & Williams has announced that Michael A. Silva will join their Miami office as a partner within their private wealth tax practice. Silva has 13 years of experience with tax law as well as over a decade of international tax experience in addition to having been an adjunct professor of law at the University of Miami. Silva will join Hunton & Williams partner Cary Tolley in the tax practice.
