Law Firms and Their Blogs
Friday, 05 September 2008
Some law firms are finally utilizing the internet and more specifically, their websites to help promote and create an image. The WilmerHale website actually gives a personal touch by some of the associates blogging from time to time. These blogs transform the attorneys from a mass of rich WilmerHale troops into real individuals. It gives perspective lateral recruits an idea of the atmosphere they would be joining. Arnold & Porter does something similar and yet oh so different. The associates are speaking their minds, outloud! They have “video blogs”. This personable style must be making a difference!

Law Firms on Facebook?!
Thursday, 04 September 2008
Last month it was announced that Curtis, Mallet-Prevost, Colt & Mosle had made it to the social networking site “Facebook”, as the first major law firm to do so. But, other firms are now being represented on the site, not by the law firm itself, but by its associates. They are becoming members of their firm's Facebook group. These group can be made anyone, not necessarily by the firm's leaders. One of the most noticeable law firm groups is more like a fan club: "I'm in love with MoFo!" It is reasonable to assume that this trend will become even more popular amongst big law firms.

The 50 Best Law Firms For Women Attorneys
Wednesday, 03 September 2008
Flex-Time Lawyers and Working Mothers Magazine released the second annual survey Tuesday, containing the 50 best law firms for women. The survey takes many factors into account, including: work-life balance, retention of female attorneys, family accommodation, and mentoring opportunities for women. This year, the survey has had increased participation with 115 firms taking part, up from last year’s 85. Ten New York law firms made the cut, four of which are repeats from last year’s list. The survey found some interesting results: an outstanding 98 percent of the top 50 firms host networking programs for female lawyers, 68 percent provide mentoring for senior female associates and 62 percent offer management training for women attorneys. Almost all firms surveyed have some type of flexible and/or part-time work schedules, paid parental leave and outreach programs that include women attorneys who opt to stay home during their children's formative years with help in maintaining bar association memberships and CLE credits. This survey may play an integral role of maintaining and reaching suitable working conditions for female lawyers for years to come.

Law Firms, Are You Ready for the Climate Challenge?
Monday, 28 July 2008
A survey conducted recently concluded that on average, an attorney uses about 100,000 sheets a year. Divided by an assumed 2,000 hour work year, that breaks down to 50 pages an hour! The “climate challenge”, proposed by members from both the American Bar Association and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The aim of the challenge is to limit law firm's environmental impact on the environment. The first order of business is to limit the amount of paper used. But in order to do so, the mindset must change. Instead of printing drafts, contracts, pleadings, bulletins, and memos (which on paper, are easily taken home, on the bus, etc), the computer must usurp power. Not only will becoming greener help the environment, it can also help the business. Being a green firm can attract green clients. It can also save the company money on energy, paper, ink, etc.
