New Delaware Office for Womble Carlyle
Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice has opened a new office in Delaware with the acquisition of six partners from Connolly Bove. New Austin Office for Sedgwick
San Francisco-based firm Sedgwick, Detert, Moran & Arnold has opened a new office in Austin, the firm’s twelfth in total. Sedgwick has snagged Jackson Walker partner Laura Lee Prather to head the new office. The firm will look to add additional associates immediately. Sedgwick employs a total of 351 attorneys. Steptoe & Johnson to Open Century City Office
Washington D.C. firm Steptoe & Johnson will open a new office in Century City. The office will be seeded with four partners acquired from Alschuler Grossman Stein & Kahan, with plans to quickly expand to 20 attorneys and a long-term number between 40 and 50. The practice will focus on insurance, tax and commercial litigation, including intellectual property. The salary hikes seen on the East and West Coasts earlier this year are starting to find their way to the central U.S., albeit in proportion to local markets. Denver-based Holme Roberts has given a 17% raise to its first-years, taking annual wages from $90,000 up to $110,000. The firm cites both local and national competition as reasons for the increase. Phoenix-based Snell & Wilmer, with 196 attorneys in the city, has also increased first-year salaries to $110,000. Thomas Stewart, managing partner of Kansas City firm Lathrop & Gage, has seen an increase in first-year salaries to $95,000 at his firm. In his opinion, though, the high cost of these first-year associates has made the market for second to fourth year laterals an appealing and truly competitive place. Source:www.law.com

Reed Smith Acquires Richards Butler
The deal merging U.S. giant Reed Smith with U.K. firm Richards Butler is official, confirmed today in a vote by the two firms’ partners. The new firm employs approximately 1,300 attorneys worldwide. U.S. offices will continue to operate under the name Reed Smith, while U.K. branches will use the name Reed Smith Richards Butler. The Hong Kong branch of Richards Butler will remain independent for the time being but look at joining the merger in the future. Source:www.legalweek.com

Pennsylvania firms Buchanan Ingersoll and Klett Rooney Lieber & Schorling have merged, forming a new 525 attorney entity to be known as Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney. Effective as of July 1, the merger will make Buchanan Ingersoll the largest firm in Pennsylvania, with 313 attorneys practicing within the state.
