Cooley Expands Global Product Safety Capabilities in North America With Key US Hire

 Cooley is expanding its global product safety, compliance and liability team with the addition of Matt Howsare, who joins as special counsel based in Washington, DC, where he will lead Cooley’s North American product safety practice. Howsare arrives from Mintz, where he was chair of the firm’s consumer product safety practice. He previously served as chief of staff at the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

King & Spalding Adds Noted Trial Lawyer Steven Zager to Austin Office

King & Spalding today announced that Steven Zager has joined the firm’s Trial and Global Disputes practice as a partner in the Austin office. Zager is a jury trial lawyer who represents clients in industries including medical devices, telecommunications, computer hardware and software, professional services, transportation, food and beverage, and chemicals. Zager joins from Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld, where he was based in New York and led that firm’s Intellectual Property practice for many years. He is returning to Austin where he practiced earlier in his career.

Troutman Sanders and Pepper Hamilton Announce Plan to Combine

Troutman Sanders and Pepper Hamilton have agreed to merge effective April 1, 2020. The new law firm, Troutman Pepper Hamilton Sanders LLP, or “Troutman Pepper,” will have 1,100 attorneys in 23 offices across the country. Troutman Pepper will offer its clients greater resources and bench strength, enhanced practices and expanded geographical reach. The announcement follows a vote by both firms’ partnerships earlier this week.

Cross-border Energy Transactions Lawyer Nicolas Borda Joins Reed Smith in Houston

Nicolas Borda has joined Reed Smith’s Global Energy & Natural Resources Group as a partner in the firm’s 75-attorney Houston office. Borda has more than 25 years of experience in all facets of oil and gas (upstream, midstream and downstream), power and renewable energy projects. Borda, who also joins Reed Smith’s Latin America Business Team, has been involved in some of the largest energy deals throughout Latin America, including the joint operating agreement for a multibillion dollar, first-of-its-kind deep water project in the Gulf of Mexico and the development of an LNG project in Northern Mexico. Before joining Reed Smith, Borda was a partner with Haynes and Boone based in Mexico City.

Cooley is further expanding its global presence with the launch of an office in Singapore. It is the firm’s 16th location worldwide, following openings in Brussels and Hong Kong last year. Ferish Patel, partner in charge of the new office, and Matthew Bartus, co-chair of Cooley’s global emerging companies and venture capital practice, who is relocating from Silicon Valley, will serve as the firm’s first resident partners in Singapore.
