Clyde & Co has begun merger talks with construction firm Shadbolt. Shadbolt has one international office in Paris. If this goes through, the combined firm will jump to number 14 in the The Lawyer’s UK 200.

Sidley Austin has formally launched its London Dispute Resolution practice. Dorothy Cory-Wright will lead the group which will focus on international arbitration, internal investigations, and commercial disputes. About half of Sidley’s laweyrs (approximately 850 lawyers) work with dispute resolution cases.

An Intellectual Property litigator has jumped from DLA Piper to Jones Day. Randy Kay has landed at the firm’s San Diego office after speding 20 years at DLA Piper. He is the second partner to laterally land at the San Diego office in two weeks.

In 2008 the office had 424 attorneys and now has 379. Jones Day cut 18% of its Hong Kong office, going from 61 attorneys to 50. White & Case shut down its Bangkok, dismissing 44 attorneys.

Blake Dawson has announced that it will not be merging with another UK firm and will instead focus on the Asia legal market. The firm plans to open an office in Tokyo in early 2010. The new firm will work closely with the office in Jakarta due to the increase of activity between Japan and Indonesia. The next step in the plan is to focus on the Australia market.
