Major Merger in the Works: Hogan & Hartson & Lovells

Hogan & Hartson and Lovells have announced that they are in the midst of discussing merging. The outcome of the merger would be a global firm of about 2500 lawyers. The two firms would have a combined gross revenue of $1.9 billion based on 2008 figures. This would make the combined firm # 4 on the top 200 firms list.

Two Top Firms in European M&A Deals

Linklater and Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer are at the top of the list when it comes to the European M&A markets up to now in 2009. Freshfields takes 1st place in terms of value by making 105 deals totaling $127.9bn (£80bn) in Europe. Linklaters beats all in terms of volume (and is 2nd by value).The firm worked on 116 deals worth $111.4bn (£70bn).European M&A deals have reached a six-year low.

Nine IP Leave Fish & Richardson for Bracewell & Giuliani

Bracewell & Giuliani has acquired nine attorneys in its Austin office from Fish & Richardson.  The decision to leave was prompted by the fact that Fish & Richardson had announced that it planned to close its Austin office.  The group of IP attorneys, led by partner Alan Alrbight, decided they should stick around in Austin.  Mission achieved.

Vinson & Elkins Wants to Open in Saudi Arabia

Word is out that Vinson & Elkins is looking to launch in Saudi Arabia.  The firm has offices nearby in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.  In Saudi Arabi, an international firm must first sign up with a local lawyer to be allowed to open an office there.  There is no word of with whom the US firm is in discussion.

A&O Takes on Capital Markets Partner in London

Allen & Overy has added to its presence in London with its latest lateral from Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom.  Robert Williams, a capital markets partner, is boosting the US-UK transactional practice.  The news of Williams comes after the addition of partner Kevin Muzilla from Milbank Tweed Hadley & McCloy.

Bill Clinton’s Friend and Notable Reporter Land at McDernitt Will & Emery

McDermott Will & Emery have gained former White House special counsel, Lanny Davis and distinguished journalist, Eileen O’Connor.   Both leave firm Herrington & Sutcliffe, where they led the legal, strategic and crisis management practice.   Davis is a friend and supporter of former President Bill Clinton.  O’Connor spent almost a quarter of a century working as a reporter for ABC News and CNN.
