KazMunaiGas, Kazakhstan’s state oil and gas company, secured a $1.13 billion Chinese loan on Wednesday to complete an upgrade that will enable its Atyrau oil refinery to produce cleaner fuels. Morgan Lewis advised KazMunaiGas on the transaction.

Cooley LLP announced an important litigation victory for Cooley client Entergy Corporation. The Fifth Circuit ruled in favor of Entergy’s claim for almost $250 million in foreign tax credits for the UK “windfall tax,” a tax on companies in regulated industries that were privatized by the UK. The victory was the product of close collaboration between Entergy’s Tax Counsel and the Cooley tax litigation team. The victory was achieved despite a recent adverse Third Circuit ruling (not involving Cooley) on the same tax.

Hogan Lovells announced today that a team of its corporate and transactional lawyers are advising client Laboratory Corporation of America Holdings (LabCorp) on LabCorp’s proposed acquisition of MEDTOX Scientific, Inc. (NASDAQ: MTOX) in a cash merger having a value of approximately US$240 million. LabCorp is an S&P 500 company headquartered in Burlington, NC and operates one of the largest clinical laboratory networks in the world, with a U.S. network of 36 primary laboratories. MEDTOX Scientific offers a variety of laboratory services and devices geared towards the detection of drug and alcohol use.

Global law firm White & Case LLP has advised China Development Bank (CDB) on its commitment of up to US$750 million to fund the procurement, construction, installation and operation of solar power projects in New Jersey, USA with a total installed capacity of up to 300MW. The financing comprises both secured EPC financing to be provided to SPI Solar and secured long-term financing to be provided to KDC Solar.
