The Board of SNR Denton Group (a Swiss Verein) announced today that it will add a new member firm in Hong Kong. The Hong Kong office, formerly affiliated with Hammonds LLP, will become associated with SNR Denton upon regulatory approval, and will include 20 professionals, including six partners. The office will initially be known as Brandt Chan & Partners.

Davis Polk & Wardwell is opening an office in Hong Kong with the addition of two new partners. Bonnie Y. T. Chan and Antony Dapiran are joing the firm. Chan was previously with the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. Dapiran previously practiced with Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, where he was the Beijing managing partner.

Kobre & Kim LLP, based in New York, is launching an office in Hong Kong. William McGovern, from Morgan Stanley, will lead the office. The firm hopes to open the new office by the end of September.

Norton Rose is on an a hiring spree in Asia it seems. The firm hired two lateral Intellectual Property partners for its Hong Kong office. Gigi Cheah and Justin Davidson have joined the firm DLA Piper. The addition of these two partners brings Norton’s Hong Kong partner count to 18.

Dacheng Law Offices, China’s largest law firm, has just launched in Hong Kong to take advantage of the increase in finance and mergers. The office will have 15 partners by the end of 2010. Dacheng has 29 offices in Chinca, one in Los Angeles and one in Singapore.

Hogan & Hartson has lost its managing partner in Hong Kong. Gordon Ng has left the firm to join O’Melveny & Myers as a partner. Ng is 17 years experienced in corporate and finance transactions in Hong Kong.

Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP has just made a huge lateral hire for its Hong Kong office. Maurice Hoo has joined the firm as co-head of the global private equity practice. Hoo most recently practiced at Paul, Hastings, Janofsky & Walker LLP.

Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton plans to focus on growing its presence in Hong Kong, New York and London. The firm is famous for rarely making a lateral hire and it continues to be cautious about making such decisions. But, the firm’s finances fared better after the economic downfall than many other US firms. Its total revenue declined by $4 million to $965 million and its profit per equity partner remained the same.
