The Washington, D.C., office of K&L Gates LLP has added Stephen M. Humenik as a partner in the investment management, hedge funds and alternative investments and derivatives and structured products practices of the global law firm’s financial services practice area. He joins K&L Gates from Covington & Burling LLP, where he led the global futures and derivatives practice.
Humenik has more than two decades of experience on cross-border regulatory, compliance, and enforcement matters involving the United States Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), derivatives markets, and physical and financial commodities. He advises a diverse range of clients, including asset managers, hedge funds, swap dealers, financial institutions, trading platforms, commodity and corporate end-users, trade associations, and cryptocurrency and FinTech companies on the implementation of CFTC regulations, including the registration, trading, clearing, and other compliance obligations stemming from global regulatory developments.
He previously served at the CFTC as a special counsel and policy advisor to former CFTC Commissioner Scott O’Malia. Humenik was also general counsel and chief regulatory officer of interest rate swap derivatives market Eris Exchange, LLC, where he oversaw Eris’ registration as a futures exchange, as well as its legal and regulatory affairs.

Humenik’s arrival follows the addition of public policy and law partner Andrew Wright to the Washington, D.C., office earlier this month.
