The global law firm Jones Day has announced the arrival of three lawyers to the Firm’s Washington Office. David Applebaum and Michael Oblon both join the Firm as partners in its Energy and Intellectual Property practices, respectively, while Amie Colwell Breslow comes to Jones Day as of counsel in the Tax Practice.
Mr. Applebaum counsels energy industry clients, representing them in energy regulatory enforcement matters before the Federal Regulatory Commission (“FERC”) and other agencies and in complex civil litigations, government enforcement, and internal investigations. He previously served six years at the FERC as director of the division of investigations in the Office of Enforcement, where he was involved in major legal, policy, investigative, and litigation matters and was the division’s liaison to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s office of enforcement.
In addition to other matters, Mr. Applebaum’s client work has included representing natural gas providers, power traders, utilities, and other market participants in FERC market manipulation investigations, representing energy-sector clients in antitrust and energy-related litigation, and guiding market participants through FERC self-reports. He also regularly advises energy companies on proposed trading and other business strategies to avoid or mitigate compliance risk.
“David’s experience at the FERC and his high-level client representations give him particularly good insight to the compliance and enforcement matters that confront our energy clients,” said Jeff Schlegel, who leads Jones Day’s global Energy Practice. “His work with clients across different energy sectors make him a great addition to our team in Washington, and we look forward to working with him.”
Mr. Oblon focuses on patent and trade secret litigation and strategic counseling for technology companies that develop software, electronics and electromechanical products. On behalf of plaintiffs, Michael has secured settlements totaling over $65 million. For defendants, he has won numerous patent cases on summary judgment of non-infringement, invalidity or both, and has won affirmances of those judgments on appeal to the Federal Circuit.
Mr. Oblon has been lead litigation counsel in dozens of cases in state and federal district courts across the United States, the International Trade Commission, the Court of Federal Claims, the PTAB, and the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Armed with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and a background as a former patent examiner and as a former Federal Circuit judicial clerk, he also maintains an active strategic IP counseling practice, including managing patent portfolios and facilitating implementation of company-specific trade secret policies. Mr. Oblon joins from a national law firm where he was the founder of that firm’s East Coast IP practice in 2006.

Ms. Breslow comes to Jones Day with more than 20 years of experience working in international tax planning. Most recently, Amie worked at PwC where she advised clients on domestic and cross-border mergers, acquisitions, integrations, spin-offs and other divisive strategies, and the pre-sale restructuring of assets and operations located around the world. Her previous experience includes a position as senior tax counsel at GE, and serving for six years as an attorney-adviser in the Office of Associate Chief Counsel (Corporate) for the Internal Revenue Service.
