DOJ’s Chief of Litigation for Criminal Fraud Section Joins Squire Patton Boggs

Jerrob Duffy has joined the Government Investigations & White Collar (GIWC) practice at global law firm Squire Patton Boggs as partner following a 20 year career at the Department of Justice, where he most recently served as Chief of the Litigation Unit in the Criminal Division’s Fraud Section.

Squire has announced several additions into its global GIWC practice this year, including four senior hires across London and Paris, including its new European practice head Hannah Laming In the US, former Acting U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio Vipal Patel joined the firm in May, Guidehouse, Inc. Senior Director Adam Klauder joined in August and Ally Rich joined in January from Flannery Georgalis, LLC.

Jerrob Duffy Career Biography:

Jerrob Duffy has served with distinction as a federal prosecutor, most recently as the Chief of the Fraud Section’s Litigation Unit, where he supervised cases involving Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), securities, commodities, health care fraud, bank fraud, money laundering and other violations. As the Fraud Section’s Litigation Chief since August 2021, Jerrob supervised investigations and trials, including some of the Fraud Section’s most challenging cases. Jerrob also supervised substantial district court and appellate litigation, assisting prosecutors across the Fraud Section with investigation strategies, trial preparation, and the presentation of evidence in court. Jerrob worked with senior Justice Department officials to handle some of the Fraud Section’s most high-profile matters, often involving significant legal and policy challenges. Jerrob also worked with numerous U.S. Attorney’s Offices, assisting with investigations and trial-related challenges in white collar criminal matters.

After clerking for a United States District Judge and working as an associate at a New York law firm, Jerrob started as a Trial Attorney in the Torts Branch of the Civil Division. Jerrob then served as a Trial Attorney in the Criminal Section of the Civil Rights Division, where he tried criminal civil rights cases involving law enforcement misconduct, hate crimes, and involuntary servitude. Jerrob also completed a detail as a Special AUSA for the District of Columbia where he tried cases in the Felony Trial Section. Jerrob then moved to the Fraud Section of the Criminal Division from 2006 to 2011, where he served as a Senior Trial Attorney investigating and prosecuting cases in each of the three subject matter areas of the Fraud Section’s litigating units – FCPA, Health Care Fraud, and Market Integrity and Major Frauds (MIMF). Jerrob prosecuted health care fraud cases while assisting the Fraud Section’s first Health Care Fraud Strike Force takedown in Miami in 2007. After joining the FCPA Unit, he led FCPA prosecutions involving an international telecommunications and mobile phone company and an international oil and gas services company. His other FCPA investigations involved companies in the energy, technology, and telecoms industries. Jerrob also led commodities and corporate fraud prosecutions including the manipulation of the North American propane market by commodities traders at a major oil and gas exploration and trading company.

Jerrob left the Fraud Section in 2011 to begin a nine-year stint as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Economic Crimes Section at the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida. Jerrob prosecuted a range of white-collar cases involving securities and commodities violations, financial institution fraud, money laundering, foreign bribery and corruption, and decentralized finance and crypto-related violations, often working in parallel with regulators at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, the U.S. Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, and other agencies.

Jerrob returned to the Fraud Section in 2020, where he re-joined the FCPA Unit as a Senior Litigation Counsel. Before being asked to serve in his most recent role as the Fraud Section’s Litigation Chief, and at the request of senior Justice Department officials, Jerrob created and led the Fraud Section’s Special Matters Unit (SMU). Under Jerrob’s leadership, the SMU devised new strategies and techniques for handling privileged information in the Fraud Section’s investigations and charged cases, including hiring attorneys and staff, devising new policies, and successfully employing privilege litigation strategies in dozens of criminal cases across the country. Throughout his time at DOJ, Jerrob tried more than 20 cases to a jury, including 15 of those as lead prosecutor.
