Dentons, the global law firm, today named Jeffry Erney as a partner in the Firm’s Tax practice in Washington, DC. Erney will co-lead Dentons US tax controversy practice with James N. Mastracchio. The addition of Erney further reinforces the Firm’s tax controversy and litigation capabilities to serve domestic and international clients.
Erney is a highly-experienced civil tax litigation lawyer who spent nearly a decade as a senior tax attorney in the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Office of the Chief Counsel. He also led the IRS Practice and Procedure Group for a major accounting firm before entering private legal practice. Erney focuses his practice on corporate tax matters as well as audit and controversy. He has litigated more than 50 tax court cases and numerous circuit and district court cases as well.
“We’re extremely pleased to welcome Jeff to Dentons,” said Dentons US Managing Partner Mike McNamara. “His practice and capabilities are a key strategic fit in our multi-jurisdictional audit and controversy practice as different tax jurisdictions seek to simultaneously audit large taxpayers. Moreover, the combination of Erney and Mastracchio leading our US tax controversy practice makes it a formidable team.”
While at the IRS, Erney received numerous awards for opinions he authored as well as Attorney of the Year for the agency’s Central Region.
Erney earned his JD from Case Western Reserve University School of Law and his BS from Cleveland State University, where he was also a member of Beta Alpha Psi, an international honors organization for accounting, finance and information systems students. He also is a Certified Public Accountant.
