Baker Botts Expands Global Intellectual Property Group with Life Sciences Patent Partner Martin A. Bruehs

Baker Botts L.L.P., a leading international energy, technology, and life sciences law firm, is growing its global industry-leading intellectual property department with the addition of life sciences and chemicals patent partner Martin A. Bruehs in Washington, D.C. He joins the firm from Sheppard Mullin, where he served as a partner and Head of the East Coast Chemical Patent Practice.

Bruehs is a veteran patent practitioner with more than 25 years of experience across pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, chemicals, and medical devices. His practice encompasses patent portfolio development, freedom-to-operate analysis, licensing, validity and infringement opinions, patent litigation and post-grant proceedings, and integrated IP strategy for emerging and established life sciences companies around the globe.

The addition strengthens Baker Botts’ life sciences award-winning IP practice at a time when pharmaceutical and biotech companies increasingly need integrated counsel spanning patent prosecution, regulatory strategy, and IP litigation.

“Life sciences companies right now are racing to protect breakthrough innovations across multiple jurisdictions simultaneously, and Martin has been doing exactly that for 25 years,” said Managing Partner Danny David. “His decades of hands-on experience prosecuting and enforcing patents for life sciences innovators across the globe are critical for us as an IP leader.”

“Martin is an IP counselor who thinks like a litigator, which helps our clients build portfolios of value and not just portfolios based on numbers,” said Baker Botts IP Chair Christa Brown-Sanford. “Clients need IP strategies that support asset development, licensing deals, and investor due diligence. Martin connects those dots.”

“What drew me to Baker Botts was the sophistication and breadth of the IP team across patent portfolio development, litigation, and transactions,” Martin Bruehs said. “The firm’s international platform provides powerful opportunities to deliver integrated solutions for clients building and scaling life sciences businesses across the U.S., Europe, Asia and the Middle East.”
