Accomplished Antitrust Litigator Joins Freshfields from the Department of Justice

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer US LLP (“Freshfields”) announced today that Andrew (“Andy”) J. Ewalt, former Counsel to the Director of Litigation of the Antitrust Division of the US Department of Justice (“DOJ”), has joined as a partner in the firm’s global antitrust litigation practice. Andy’s appointment will bolster the firm’s US antitrust litigation offering in Washington, DC and follows the arrival of leading US antitrust litigator Eric Mahr from the DOJ in February of this year.

Andy joins the firm after a distinguished career in public service at the DOJ, and is among a select group of lawyers in the Antitrust Division who have substantial experience litigating both civil and criminal antitrust cases. During a tenure that spanned three presidential administrations, he not only tried significant cases but also served as a Special Assistant US Attorney in the Eastern District of Virginia, and in the Division’s management as Counsel to the Director of Litigation. He has been repeatedly recognized for his service, receiving the Attorney General’s Distinguished Service Award and the Assistant Attorney General Award of Distinction for three consecutive years.

Paul Yde, US Head of Freshfields’ Antitrust, Competition and Trade group commented, “Andy brings us invaluable insight and experience from his work at DOJ. We’re excited to add him to the outstanding team of former DOJ and government litigators we have in the US, as well as to our global investigations and regulatory enforcement teams in the US, London, Europe and Asia.”

“Freshfields has provided me with a truly unique opportunity to work on an unmatched platform with an outstanding group of lawyers,” said Andy. “I’m looking forward to working closely with my former DOJ colleague, Eric Mahr, on further building the antitrust litigation practice and enhancing our offering to clients.”

“Andy’s addition is another reason why our global antitrust practice is regarded as best in class among our clients and peers,” said Thomas Janssens, Global Head of Freshfields’ Antitrust, Competition and Trade group. “His extensive government experience further strengthens our US antitrust litigation capabilities, as well as our comprehensive antitrust offering in the US and around the world.”

“Freshfields’ US offering encompasses an exceptional bench of lawyers that continues to grow, with recent additions including Eric Bruce earlier this month, and now Andy to our market leading antitrust and litigation practices. Andy has an excellent reputation in the market, and it’s my pleasure to welcome him to the firm,” said Peter D. Lyons, Freshfields’ US Regional Managing Partner.
