Seyfarth Continues Growth of Seattle Office With Addition of Matthew Moersfelder to Establish Intellectual Property Presence

Seyfarth Shaw LLP has announced that Matthew Moersfelder has joined the international law firm as a partner in its Intellectual Property practice group, based in its fast-growing Seattle office.

Moersfelder brings to Seyfarth nearly 17 years of experience in intellectual property law, most recently at Davis Wright Tremaine LLP, where he had been a partner. He previously was an associate at Kenyon & Kenyon.

“Matthew Moersfelder significantly boosts our Litigation group by establishing an IP practice in Seattle, enabling us to broaden our local offerings and fill a need to grow our trademark practice with a highly regarded IP lawyer,” said James McGrath, chair of Seyfarth’s Litigation department. “His focus on trademark prosecution and transactions will mesh quite well with our transactional practices and serve our clients’ needs.”

Moersfelder focuses his practice in the areas of trademark, unfair competition, and copyright law, with an emphasis on protecting and promoting clients’ overall brand. He has enabled notable clients to obtain domestic and international trademarks, maintain and protect current trademarks, and assert trademark rights against infringers.

He also counsels on a variety of brand-related IP issues, including advertising, maintaining quality control, licensing, and IP acquisition. His practice additionally covers counseling and management of e-commerce matters, including terms of use and privacy policies for clients’ web presence, domain name registration and application strategies, cybersquatting, effective online branding and preventing unauthorized online use.

In addition to Moersfelder’s counseling work, he represents clients in federal and state court, before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB), and in domain name arbitrations.

“Matthew Moersfelder is an important addition to the evolution of our rapidly developing presence in Seattle,” said Denice Tokunaga, co-managing partner of the firm’s Seattle office. “Matthew will be a key player in growing our IP practice in Seattle, and the Seattle Office generally. He aligns seamlessly with our strategic goals and fits squarely into our growth strategy here.”

Moersfelder’s clients span a broad range of industries, including consumer goods and services, media and entertainment, games and gaming, chemical distribution, fashion and apparel, and travel.

Moersfelder is ranked by World Trademark Review, which commented that “Moersfelder brilliantly plays the role of strategic counsellor and portfolio manager.”

“I am thrilled to be moving to Seyfarth and be given an opportunity to play a key role in the progression of its burgeoning Seattle office,” said Moersfelder. “Seyfarth and its international capabilities will allow me to grow an IP practice for the firm on the West Coast and especially here in Seattle, where Seyfarth has many major clients that will benefit from my wide range of intellectual property capabilities.”

Moersfelder received his JD from The George Washington University Law School and his BSE from the University of Michigan. He is admitted to the Washington and New York Bars and is also admitted to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). He serves on the board of Columbia Legal Services.
