Baker Botts Welcomes State and Local Tax Partner to San Francisco Office

Baker Botts L.L.P. announced today that William Gorrod has joined the firm’s San Francisco office as a partner in the State and Local Tax (SALT) practice.

Previously with Morrison & Foerster LLP, Mr. Gorrod is the seventh partner to join the firm’s San Francisco office within the past year. In 2019, Baker Botts welcomed lateral partners that included leading technology litigators, Jonathan Patchen and Cheryl Cauley; environmental crisis partners Lily Chinn and Matt Baker; tax controversy partner Jon Feldhammer; and technology and capital markets partner, Michael Torosian.

“Will is a seasoned and driven tax lawyer with a great portfolio of clients in the technology space,” said John Martin, Managing Partner of Baker Botts. “We believe his addition to the firm and his focus on state and local tax will create synergies with our federal tax disputes practice in California led by newly welcomed tax controversy partner, Jon Feldhammer.”

Mr. Gorrod focuses his practice on state and local tax planning, compliance, and corporate transactions on a multistate basis. He also represents clients in state and local tax controversies throughout the United States, with a particular focus in California and New York. He regularly advises clients on matters pertaining to state and local income and franchise taxes, gross receipt taxes, sales and use taxes, payroll taxes, and real estate transfer taxes, and represents clients in audits, administrative appeals, voluntary disclosure agreements, penalty abatements, and amnesties.

“We are thrilled to have Will join our nationally recognized Tax department, following the footsteps of new tax partners Jon Feldhammer, Barbara de Marigny and Robin Melman, who all joined the firm within the past year,” said Richard Husseini, Baker Botts partner and firmwide Tax Department Chair. “He has a stellar reputation and brings a wealth of knowledge from a transactional and disputes perspective that will support our focus in the technology and private equity sectors. He also adds to the national reach of our SALT practice.”

Mr. Gorrod received his B.S. from North Carolina State University, his M.B.A. from North Carolina Central University, his J.D. from Cardozo School of Law, and his LL.M. from New York University School of Law. He is a member of the California, New York and North Carolina bars.
