Eversheds Sutherland Tax Practice Continues Growth with Arrival of Partner Nikki Dobay

Eversheds Sutherland is pleased to welcome Nikki E. Dobay to the firm’s Tax Practice Group as a State and Local Tax (SALT) partner. Ms. Dobay joins the firm’s Sacramento office from the Council On State Taxation (COST), where she had been senior tax counsel. Ms. Dobay is the second partner in a month to join our SALT group following the arrival of Breen Schiller, the firm’s first SALT partner in Chicago.

Ms. Dobay represented COST’s membership of nearly 550 multistate corporations, where she advanced COST’s mission to preserve and promote equitable and nondiscriminatory state taxation of multi-jurisdictional entities. She has worked on legislative, administrative and judicial advocacy efforts covering state and local tax policy issues. Focusing on the Western states, Nikki has testified before several state legislatures and taxing agencies and has worked closely with policy makers on the significant state tax issues in those states, including the recently enacted Oregon Corporate Activity Tax. She also collaborated on SALT issues with business and taxpayer associations, departments of revenue, as well as national tax administrator organizations, including the Multistate Tax Commission (MTC), the Federation of Tax Administrators (FTA), and the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL).

“Nikki is a terrific person who is fun to be around and work with,” said Jeffrey A. Friedman, Eversheds Sutherland’s Tax Practice Group leader and former COST vice president and counsel. “Nikki’s valuable COST experience includes representing clients in front of state courts and legislatures. Nikki will work closely with SALT Partners Charlie Kearns and former COST General Counsel Todd Lard on state tax policy initiatives. I can’t wait to introduce Nikki to our clients and friends.”

Ms. Dobay will add to Eversheds Sutherland’s growing California tax team. SALT Partner Timothy Gustafson and Senior Counsel Eric Coffill returned to the firm last year, followed by the hiring of Associates Annie Rothschild and Alexandra Louderback.

Ms. Dobay is the second female tax partner and 17th female lateral to join Eversheds Sutherland this year.
