Broker-Dealer and Litigation Partner John Lukanski Returns to Reed Smith

Reed Smith today announced that John Lukanski has returned to the firm as a partner in its Financial Industry Group. He will be a leader in its broker-dealer practice. John, who was previously with the firm until 2016, rejoins Reed Smith from McGuireWoods LLP, where he was a partner. He will sit in the firm’s Princeton, New Jersey office and will also spend time in the firm’s New York City office.

John, who is a seasoned business litigator, focuses his nationwide practice on representing broker-dealer and wealth management clients in internal reviews, regulatory investigations by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and state securities and insurance regulators, arbitration and litigation, and compliance counseling.

“Very few attorneys possess the versatility and experience that John has in representing broker-dealers. His track record is very impressive” said Ed Estrada, Global Chair of Reed Smith’s Financial Industry Group. “We are happy to welcome him back to the firm, and look forward to our clients benefitting from John’s capabilities, especially those with broker-dealer operations.”

Diane Bettino, a member of the firm’s Executive Committee who also serves as the Managing Partner of the firm’s Princeton, New Jersey office added, “We are so excited to have John back. He brings substantive experience as well as the type of steady counsel that clients seek out. He will be a welcome addition to the team.”

Having represented broker-dealers of securities on a nationwide basis for almost 20 years, John brings to the firm a unique broker-dealer regulatory and litigation practice that meets a need that clients have sought, and one which complements the Financial Industry Group’s existing non-consumer litigation practice.

“For so many years, I handled the toughest cases for my broker-dealer and other wealth management clients. But my best years are ahead of me and I was looking to raise my game even further. When the opportunity came up to return to Reed Smith, a firm I am familiar with, it hit the bull’s-eye,” said John. He added, “What stands out most for me is the firm’s emphasis on team and its people, and its commitment to knowing its clients and delivering value to them. We really have a great opportunity to be an industry-leading broker-dealer law practice. The feedback from clients about my move has been entirely positive.”

John received his J.D. from Vanderbilt University School of Law in 1998, and his B.S. from Seton Hall University in 1995.
