Saul Ewing LLP has added two partners to its Pittsburgh office with the hiring of T. Patrick Martin, a former federal public corruption and white-collar prosecutor who represents clients facing government scrutiny, and Julia Varholla, a trusts and estates attorney with more than 20 years of experience.
“Saul Ewing is excited to have Pat and Julia join our team,” said Jared Hawk, Pittsburgh Office Managing Partner. “Although they have distinct practices, both are united in their commitment to deeply understanding and addressing the specific needs of our clients, thereby strengthening the firm’s capabilities in both trusts and estates law and white collar and government enforcement litigation.”
An experienced trial attorney and investigator with 17 years of prosecutorial experience, Mr. Martin was previously an Assistant U.S. Attorney (AUSA) for the District of Columbia, where his tenure culminated as the chief of that office’s Criminal Division. He was also an AUSA in the Public Corruption and Civil Rights Unit in the Eastern District of Michigan. He has another 11 years of in-house legal experience as a general counsel and as a civil litigator.
At Saul Ewing, Mr. Martin will represent clients facing civil enforcement actions, criminal investigations, and prosecutions by indictment. His internal investigation practice will include helping higher education institutions, public and private entities, corporate officials, government officials, and private individuals assess potential civil and criminal liability connected to government allegations. His capabilities include advising clients on best practices to reduce their criminal and civil exposure and on the factors that the U.S. Justice Department typically weighs in deciding whether to go forward with a prosecution. He will also negotiate with the government on the terms of entering into a deferred prosecution agreement or non-prosecution agreement and advise on frameworks for compliance and remediation obligations under these agreements. When issues cannot be resolved through negotiations, Mr. Martin will represent institutional and individual clients in bench and jury trials.
Ms. Varholla guides individuals and corporate and individual fiduciaries through the complex legal issues associated with estate planning and estate and trust administration. She focuses in particular on utilizing sophisticated estate and tax planning strategies to create comprehensive estate plans for high-net-worth clients. She provides thoughtful guidance to clients on estate, gift and generation-skipping tax planning, charitable gifting, asset protection and navigating family dynamics with the goal of preserving current assets and creating a legacy for the future. She has extensive hands-on experience with the estate administration process, and counsels personal representatives on their fiduciary duties and applicable tax laws. She also advises trustees with respect to interpretation issues, fiduciary duties and responsibilities, relevant federal and state taxation issues, and general trust administration.
Mr. Martin has a J.D. from Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law and a B.B.A. from University of Notre Dame. Ms. Varholla has a J.D. from University of Pittsburgh School of Law and a B.A. from the University of Pittsburgh.
