Seyfarth Shaw Adds Global Head of IP from Pharmaceutical Company Apotex, Continues Expansion of IP Practice

Leading law firm Seyfarth Shaw LLP announced today that Shashank Upadhye has joined the firm’s Litigation Department in the Intellectual Property Practice as a partner in Chicago. Upadhye joins from Apotex, Inc., a Toronto-based multi-billion dollar global pharmaceutical company, where he was Vice President and Global Head of Intellectual Property.

Upadhye’s practice includes pharmaceutical patent litigation, Hatch-Waxman law as it relates to generic and branded pharmaceutical companies and Federal Drug Administration regulatory law. He has extensive experience working on both the brand and generic sides at pharmaceutical companies, and he has advised and served as a consultant to businesses, financiers and government agencies. Prior to his position at Apotex, Upadhye was Vice President – Head of IP (U.S.) at a division of Novartis.

Upadhye’s move to Seyfarth follows the recent arrival of veteran IP litigator Michael Baniak, who joined in August as a partner from McDonnell Boehnen Hulbert & Berghoff LLP in Chicago.

“Shashank has a deep, firsthand experience in highly technical matters that are on the frontier of the pharmaceutical industry,” said Brian Michaelis, chair of Seyfarth’s Intellectual Property Practice Group. “Strategically, his unique area of expertise and substantial knowledge in the pharma and biosimilars space is a perfect fit for our quickly growing team, furthering opportunities to apply and expand our services in the life sciences industries.”

Seyfarth’s Chicago office managing partner David Rowland said, “Shashank’s legacy of building and leading legal teams in some of the largest and most well-known drug companies in the world is a testament to his success as a leader and a lawyer. His sophisticated experience makes him a strong addition to our robust group of IP attorneys in Chicago and nationally.”

Upadhye received his B.A. and B.S. degrees from Brock University, his J.D. from the New England School of Law and his LLM in Intellectual Property Law from John Marshall Law School.
