Squire Patton Boggs is pleased to announce that Jeffrey H. Koppele has joined the firm’s Tax Strategy & Benefits Practice Group as a partner based in New York. He joins from Ashurst.

Mitch Thompson, global leader of the Tax Strategy & Benefits Practice Group, said, “The expansion of our US tax team is an important part of our global growth strategy and Jeff will be a significant boost to our US and international tax offering to clients. He has a sophisticated corporate and M&A tax practice, and in-depth knowledge of complex financial transactions and products, all underpinned by overall high-level technical expertise and years of experience.”

“We look forward to welcoming Jeff to the office,” added New York managing partner Carolyn Buller. “Alongside our experienced team here in New York, Jeff’s appointment highlights our ambition to continue to expand and develop our US and cross-border transactional capabilities.”

“Squire Patton Boggs’ international presence, strength across multiple disciplines, and collegial culture all impressed me,” said Mr. Koppele. “I am delighted to be joining a strong, multi-skilled tax team integrated within a genuinely global firm.”

Mr. Koppele has extensive experience advising companies, funds, and financial institutions on tax matters in a wide range of domestic and cross-border transactions, including mergers, acquisitions, and dispositions, bankruptcy and other restructurings, funds and investments, capital markets transactions, real estate investments, financings, and financial products.

Mr. Koppele represents US and non-US buyers and sellers in M&A transactions, and advises clients on inbound and outbound tax planning and transactions, including tax-efficient structures for investments in US real estate, infrastructure, and operating businesses. He advises US and global fund managers on structuring, formation and operation of private equity, infrastructure, real estate, and debt funds, and REITs. Mr. Koppele counsels lenders and borrowers on domestic and cross-border leveraged credit facilities, as well as repo, securities lending, and other financing transactions. He also advises on tax efficiencies relating to debt and equity offerings, derivatives, and structured products.

A graduate of the University of Virginia and New York University School of Law, Mr. Koppele is an active member of the Tax Sections of both the NYSBA and the ABA, as well as the International Swaps and Derivatives Association. He speaks and writes extensively on technical tax topics and is recognized by The Legal 500 for outstanding work in financial products tax.

The appointment of Mr. Koppele follows on closely that of Charles Briand as partner in the Tax Strategy & Benefits Practice Group in Paris last month.
