BakerHostetler today announced Partner Geoffrey H. Coll joined the firm’s Litigation Group and Securities Litigation and Regulatory Enforcement practice in the New York office. Coll comes to BakerHostetler from Schiff Hardin.
Coll brings more than 20 years of experience counseling leading public and private companies and individuals through high-stakes regulatory, criminal, and civil matters related to securities litigation and regulatory affairs involving the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Department of Justice (DOJ), the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), the New York Attorney General (NYAG), and other state attorneys general. He advises clients across many industries, including financial services, insurance, and for-profit education. Coll’s practice focuses on class actions and shareholder derivative suits, and he also represents clients on matters related to insider trading, fraud, and accounting irregularities.
Coll helped set the standard in the for-profit education industry when he negotiated a multimillion-dollar settlement during a NYAG investigation that alleged consumer fraud related to graduate job placement calculations and reporting. Drawing on his experience as a former U.S. diplomat in France and India, Coll also has litigated on behalf of international companies during U.S. litigation proceedings, including those involving the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA).
“Our clients rely on the firm’s multifaceted trial lawyers to help them navigate highly complex proceedings in the United States and abroad,” said Ray Whitman, Chair of the Litigation Group. “Our growing team is strengthened by Geoffrey’s sophisticated skills in the areas of securities litigation and regulation.”
“I’m excited to welcome Geoffrey to our team,” said Marc Powers, leader of the firm’s Securities Litigation and Regulatory Enforcement team. “His unique skill set and attention to service will deepen our bench in defending securities class actions and enforcement matters, and I know clients will find his experience valuable during bet-the-company proceedings with federal and state regulatory agencies.”
“Geoffrey joins a strong team of attorneys in our New York office and across the country who have earned the reputation for being the go-to team when the stakes are high,” said George Stamboulidis, Managing Partner of the firm’s New York office. “His ability to negotiate through complex commercial matters will benefit our clients no matter where they’re located.”
“BakerHostetler’s Securities Litigation and White Collar practice teams are known for their deep bench of litigators,” said Coll. “I’m looking forward to working with their team members to continue to grow these practice areas for the firm.”
Coll, who is fluent in French, earned his J.D. from Columbia Law School in 1988, where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar and Charles Roberts Hughes Fellow. He graduated with his B.A. in English from Oberlin College, with honors, in 1982
