BakerHostetler today announced Partner Geoffrey H. Coll joined the firm’s Litigation Group and Securities Litigation and Regulatory Enforcement practice in the New York office. Coll comes to BakerHostetler from Schiff Hardin.
Coll brings more than 20 years of experience counseling leading public and private companies and individuals through high-stakes regulatory, criminal, and civil matters related to securities litigation and regulatory affairs involving the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Department of Justice (DOJ), the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), the New York Attorney General (NYAG), and other state attorneys general. He advises clients across many industries, including financial services, insurance, and for-profit education. Coll’s practice focuses on class actions and shareholder derivative suits, and he also represents clients on matters related to insider trading, fraud, and accounting irregularities.
Coll helped set the standard in the for-profit education industry when he negotiated a multimillion-dollar settlement during a NYAG investigation that alleged consumer fraud related to graduate job placement calculations and reporting. Drawing on his experience as a former U.S. diplomat in France and India, Coll also has litigated on behalf of international companies during U.S. litigation proceedings, including those involving the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA).

Coll, who is fluent in French, earned his J.D. from Columbia Law School in 1988, where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar and Charles Roberts Hughes Fellow. He graduated with his B.A. in English from Oberlin College, with honors, in 1982
