Allen & Overy continues to grow Projects, Energy, Natural Resources and Infrastructure practice with Chip Cannon

A&O today announced that George “Chip” Cannon, Jr. has joined the firm as partner in A&O’s Project, Energy, Natural Resources and Infrastructure (PENRI) practice, based in Washington, D.C. Chip joins from Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP, where he was a partner and head of the Energy Regulation, Markets and Enforcement practice. Since 2006, Chip has been recognized as a leading practitioner by Chambers USA for Energy: Electricity (Regulatory & Litigation).

A&O welcomes Chip following the firm’s 2021 acquisition of 21 lawyers from Akin Gump’s project finance and renewables team, further strengthening A&O’s PENRI practice. A&O’s PENRI team is regarded as the marquee global practice in the space, ranked Band 1 globally by Chambers and recognized for its advisory on some of the most notable energy transactions.

U.S. senior partner Tim House said, “As the U.S. energy markets continue to modernize under guidance from federal, state and local governments, Chip’s unparalleled regulatory experience will put us on the forefront of the sector, helping our clients navigate complex matters in this space. We are pleased to continue expanding this practice group with leading talent as clients accelerate their energy transition and renewable energy priorities.”

Partner John Marciano added, “We are excited to welcome Chip back to our team. His decades of energy regulatory experience round out our transactional offerings and will help our clients navigate the multifaceted U.S. energy landscape.”

Chip said, “A&O is regarded as the premier global firm in the energy and renewables sector, and has continued to demonstrate growth in the U.S., advising on some of the most prominent energy work today. I look forward to joining my former and new colleagues on this team and continuing to counsel clients on complex regulatory matters and through times of transition.”

Chip joins A&O as the 34th lateral hire in the U.S. in the last two years.

Prior to joining Akin Gump in 2012, Chip practiced law at Latham & Watkins for over a decade, where he was elevated to partner in 2006. Chip graduated with a J.D. from George Washington Law School in 1994 and is admitted to practice in Washington D.C. and New York.
