Leading International Arbitration Expert Rejoins Herbert Smith Freehills

Herbert Smith Freehills LLP is delighted to announce the return of Laurence Shore to its leading international arbitration practice. Larry is joining Herbert Smith Freehills as a partner and will be based at the firm’s New York office, which launched in September last year.

Larry Shore originally joined Herbert Smith LLP in 1995, where he was one of the partners responsible for building Herbert Smith’s international arbitration practice and establishing it as a separate practice area within the firm in 2005. In 2008, he left Herbert Smith to relocate to his native USA. He is returning to the newly merged Herbert Smith Freehills from Gibson Dunn in New York, where he spent the last five years as co-head of the firm’s International Arbitration practice.

Larry is widely regarded as a leading international arbitration practitioner. Dual qualified in the US and the UK, he has extensive experience acting in arbitrations across jurisdictions and industry sectors. In addition to his skills as an extremely effective advocate, he is regularly appointed to sit as an arbitrator. Larry has been the lead advocate in arbitration cases under the ICC, LCIA, HKIAC, AAA, UNCITRAL and Swiss Rules and has arbitrated cases under the ICC, LCIA, ICDR and Cairo Regional Centre Rules.

Larry is also a widely published author and a recognised authority on a range of international arbitration topics. His publishing and academic credentials include the co-authorship (with Professor Campbell McLachlan and Herbert Smith Freehills partner Matthew Weiniger) of “International Investment Arbitration: Substantive Principles” published by Oxford University Press, and the role of Visiting Professor at the School of International Arbitration, Queen Mary, University of London. He also sits as Chair of the New York City Bar’s International Law Committee in New York.

Larry’s return to Herbert Smith Freehills is a significant addition to its leading global international arbitration practice and particularly its newly established US capability. A key contributor to the continuing success of the firm’s dispute resolution capability, the practice has gone from strength to strength in recent years and now numbers 32 partners worldwide. It operates from every jurisdiction where the firm has presence, including the recently established New York office.

Together with the New York-based partner Chris Parker and his team, Larry Shore will play a key role in the development of the firm’s international arbitration capability in the US. He will also work closely with the firm’s Latin American Group. Larry’s knowledge of the New York market, coupled with the language skills and legal expertise of the firm’s Madrid office and Latin American arbitration specialist Christian Leathley, will enable Herbert Smith Freehills to expand its activities in this region.

Paula Hodges, co-head of Herbert Smith Freehills’ international arbitration practice commented: “We are thrilled Larry is returning. He is not only an outstanding practitioner, but also a highly regarded colleague, whom we have missed over the last few years. Larry’s in-depth arbitration knowledge and his network of contacts in the US and Latin America will play a pivotal role in the further development of our presence in these regions. We are delighted to welcome Larry back to the practice and look forward to working with him again.”
