FTC Veteran Thomas A. Cohn Joins LeClairRyan

Thomas A. Cohn, a veteran of the Federal Trade Commission, has joined the law firm of LeClairRyan as a partner on the firm’s Antitrust, Corporate, Consumer Financial Services and Compliance, Investigations and White Collar Practice Area Teams. He will be resident in the firm’s expanding New York City office.

Cohn focuses his practice on advising clients on the legal and practical aspects of compliance with Federal Trade Commission and state consumer protection regulations and industry self-regulation programs, as well as representing clients during investigations and enforcement actions. His clients include a wide variety of online and offline advertisers and marketers, and his practice covers federal and state consumer protection provisions, including consumer financial and consumer privacy laws and regulations. He will also practice out of the firm’s Washington, D.C. office. 
Prior to entering private practice, Mr. Cohn served as Director of the Federal Trade Commission’s Northeast Region, supervising its professional and support staff and leading multi-agency law enforcement efforts against various anticompetitive, unfair and/or deceptive practices. In addition to serving as Director of the FTC’s Northeast Region, Mr. Cohn began his 17-year FTC career in its Division of Marketing Practices, where he litigated fraud and rule violation cases, and later served as Counsel to the Director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, where he reviewed law enforcement recommendations, Congressional testimony and other matters for the Director. 
Cohn is a member of the ABA’s Antitrust Law Section, the New York City Bar Association’s Consumer Affairs Committee, and the New York State Bar Association’s Food, Drug and Cosmetics Section. He is a graduate of Boston University School of Law (J.D.) and Yale College (B.A) and is admitted to practice in New York and Massachusetts.
