Latham & Watkins Financial Regulatory Practice Strengthened with Addition of New York Partner

Latham & Watkins LLP is pleased to announce that Alan W. Avery has joined the firm’s New York office as a partner in the Corporate Department. Avery’s practice spans a broad range of transactional and advisory assignments, including bank regulatory matters, investments in banks and bank holding companies, and the development and analysis of institutional and retail financial products, among others.

Avery has an abundant knowledge of the complex and overlapping patchwork of US federal and state laws, together with the regulations promulgated under these laws. He has a wealth of bank regulatory expertise and an in-depth knowledge of the regulations applicable to multiple areas of the securities, investment company, commodities and insurance industries. He also advises private equity and non-US institutions seeking to acquire equity stakes in banks and bank holding companies. Avery also advises a wide range of institutions on the impact of the ongoing evolution of the US financial services regulatory environment as a result of the landmark Dodd-Frank Act.
Jimmy Brandt, Latham & Watkins’ Office Managing Partner in New York, said: “We are excited to be adding a partner with Alan’s range of expertise in the bank regulatory area. Our financial institutions group has strength in a number of core areas, including a highly regarded bank regulatory capability. We are delighted to add New York-based expertise in this sophisticated area, which complements our bank regulatory capability in Washington D.C. and Europe, as well as our global broker-dealer, derivatives, capital markets, commodities and financial products practices.”
“The addition of a partner with Alan’s in-depth knowledge of the rules governing the business of banking will be invaluable to the growth of our financial institutions practice and is key to establishing a strong and versatile financial regulatory practice group. He enjoys strong relationships with Wall Street institutions and major non-US financial institutions founded on his technical proficiency, business sense, client service and entrepreneurship,” said James C. Gorton, Global Co-Chair of the firm’s Corporate Department.
“Latham & Watkins offers a unique platform to build a leading financial institutions advisory practice both in the US and globally. The firm’s substantial resources and strengths in corporate finance, bank finance, derivatives, structured finance, private equity and M&A is very impressive. I look forward to contributing to the expansion of the firm’s bank regulatory practice,” said Avery.
Avery joins Latham & Watkins from Arnold & Porter LLP. He received his JD from Pace University Law School in 1998, summa cum laude, and a BS degree from the US Military Academy at West Point in 1983. Before his law school studies, Avery enjoyed a distinguished career in the US Army.
