Orrick Expands Intellectual Property Practice in New York

Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP announced today that Grace L. Pan has joined the firm as a partner resident in its New York office. Her practice focuses on patent, trademark and copyright litigation with particular strength in the semiconductor, chemistry, biotechnology, electronic and mechanical fields. Ms. Pan formerly was a partner with Kaye Scholer.

“Grace is a rare find. The combination of her extensive IP law experience, her technical expertise, and her fluency in Japanese, Mandarin Chinese and English make her uniquely valuable to Japanese, Taiwanese and Chinese clients on a broad range of IP matters,” said Steve Routh, co-head of Orrick’s IP Group.

Neel Chatterjee, co-head of Orrick’s IP Group, added that “We continue to seek out the best IP lawyers to remain a dominant force in high stakes IP disputes throughout the world. Grace fits right in with our strategy. She has a practice that complements our leading Asia IP capabilities and also intertwines perfectly with our IP practice in the United States.”

In addition to enforcing and defending her clients’ IP rights in various U.S. Courts, Ms. Pan defends foreign patents in Taiwan and Japan and has argued before the Japan Patent Office, the Tokyo High Court, the Taiwan Taipei District Court and the Beijing High People’s Court. She also has experience in obtaining, defending and licensing patents, copyright, trademark and domain name applications (including ICANN proceedings) and in counseling clients on IPOs, license negotiations, due diligence and freedom-to-operate opinions.

Orrick’s Intellectual Property Group represents leading companies in high-stakes patent, trademark, copyright, trade secrets, unfair competition and Internet liability disputes, as well as in United States Patent and Trademark Office (“USPTO”) interferences. The firm’s IP Group has represented more than 150 Chinese and U.S. multinational corporations before the Chinese Patent Review Board and has a preeminent practice representing Japanese electronics manufacturers. In 2013, Orrick was named to the National Law Journal’s IP Hot List and was named a finalist for California IP Department of the Year by the Recorder. This year, the firm also received three Litigator of the Week awards for IP victories from the American Lawyer and three MVP awards for IP successes from Law360.

“Orrick has everything I need to grow my practice – stellar IP litigators, a solid international platform, particularly in Asia, and a great reputation for achieved successful outcomes in complex, high-stakes and high-profile litigation. I couldn’t be more excited to join the firm,” said Ms. Pan.

Ms. Pan earned her J.D. from Northwestern University School of Law, a B.S. in Biology and Chemistry from Lewis & Clark College and a B.S. in Biochemistry from Scripps College. She is admitted to practice before the USPTO and is a registered Gaikokuho Jimu Bengoshi in Japan, one of only a few U.S. lawyers so qualified.

Ms. Pan is the third addition to Orrick’s IP Group this year. David Case, the former head of White & Case’s Japan and Northern Asia IP and commercial litigation practices, joined Orrick’s Tokyo office in March followed by Nick Setty, the former co-chair of Sheppard Mullin’s IP Group, who joined the firm’s San Francisco and Silicon Valley offices in August.
