Orrick Grows Italian M&A Practice

Orrick announced today that Gabriel Monzon-Cortarelli has joined the firm as a partner in its M&A and private equity practice, resident in Milan. He will also spend significant time in Orrick’s New York office. Gabriel is the sixth partner to join Orrick’s European M&A practice in the past year. He joins the firm from Seyfarth Shaw where he led the Italian Desk.

At Orrick, Gabriel will lead a team of Orrick bilingual U.S. and Italian lawyers —based in the firm’s Milan office and offices throughout the U.S. — focused on assisting Italian businesses looking to enter or expand their presence in the U.S. and Latin American markets and access the U.S. public and private capital markets. The team will also collaborate with Orrick’s transactional, litigation and compliance practices to guide Italian clients in their U.S. and Latin American activities.

Gabriel advises public and private companies on cross-border M&A transactions, joint ventures and strategic alliances in the U.S., Europe and Latin America. He also counsels on international capital market offerings for European and Latin American issuers and underwriters. Over the years, Gabriel has developed deep experience advising U.S. subsidiaries and affiliates of Italian companies doing business in the U.S. and Latin America on a broad range of corporate legal issues, serving as their primary outside U.S. counsel. His clients include Italian and international multinational corporations in the technology, energy & infrastructure, transportation and logistics, defense, food & beverage and consumer retail sectors, as well as global financial institutions.

“Orrick’s deep commitment to Italy, its focus on the technology, energy & infrastructure and finance sectors, and the growth of its global platform were all very attractive to me,” said Gabriel. “I am especially excited to collaborate with the firm’s dynamic and forward-looking Italian team.”

“As we continue to deepen our focus on cross-border work in Italy, we are delighted to add a practitioner with Gabriel’s global perspective and experience to our team,” said Patrizio Messina, Orrick’s Managing Partner for Europe.

Gabriel is recognized for his M&A work in Legal 500 US. Dual-qualified and dual-educated in the U.S. and U.K., he is also registered with the Italian Bar. Gabriel is very active in the Italian-American community in New York and Milan. He served for many years on the Board of Directors of the Italy-America Chamber of Commerce in New York founded in 1887. Gabriel currently serves as a member of New York’s Gruppo Esponenti Italiani, an organization of leading Italian corporate executives and professionals in the U.S., and is a trustee of La Scuola G. Marconi of New York, founded by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to meet the academic needs of Italians living in the New York City area.

Last month, Orrick added tech-focused corporate lawyer Matteo Daste, who also brings strong ties to the Italian entrepreneurial community, to its Bay Area team from Squire Patton Boggs. Over the past year, Orrick has grown its European M&A and private equity practice in London, Paris, Italy and Germany with the additions of Weyinmi Popo, one of the most active practitioners focused on private equity investment into Africa from Jones Day; Patrick Tardivy, a rising star in M&A and private equity from Freshfields; Betty Louie, the only Chinese-speaking U.S.-qualified lawyer based in Italy from DLA Piper; Christoph Brenner, a leading advisor to the European private equity market from King & Wood Mallesons; and Guillaume Kessler, the Managing Partner of Olswang’s Paris office and head of its Paris Corporate Group.

Orrick’s Italian team is ranked by Chambers Europe 2016 in corporate/M&A, private equity, compliance, restructuring, capital markets: securitization, and energy. Over the past two years, the team has been named “Law Firm of the Year” in the areas of corporate, non-performing loans, and energy law by LegalCommunity, one of Italy’s most influential legal publications.
