McDermott Adds Digital Health Partner Alya Sulaiman in Los Angeles

International law firm McDermott Will & Emery is pleased to announce the addition of Partner Alya Sulaiman to the Healthcare Practice Group in Los Angeles. Alya brings expansive digital health and health tech experience to the Firm. She works with clients to navigate complex healthcare regulatory, privacy and transactional matters, with a focus on digital health, interoperability and data use strategy. Prior to joining McDermott, Alya worked at the intersection of healthcare and technology as corporate counsel and the director of health policy and regulatory affairs for Epic Systems Corporation, a leading global healthcare software company.

“Alya’s addition advances numerous McDermott healthcare practice priorities,” Jerry Sokol, McDermott’s Global Head of Healthcare, said. “Her experience enhances our digital health skillset, bolsters our policy and counseling practice and adds significant depth to our team in California.”

Sulaiman has valuable in-house experience working with internal business units ranging from engineering teams, product managers, external affairs, sales and compliance.

Lisa Mazur, co-chair of McDermott’s Digital Health practice, added, “We’re so pleased Alya has joined our team of more than 40 lawyers focused on leading emerging and established organizations through the unique-and often unanticipated-transactional, regulatory and compliance challenges they face in the pursuit of innovation.”

Alya also has substantial experience with product counseling and provides guidance during the conception, development, launch and support of new digital health products and services. She received her JD from The Ohio State University, Moritz College of Law.

“I joined McDermott because of its stellar team and exceptional reputation as a facilitator of digital health innovation,” Alya stated. “I’m excited to put my in-house experience to use by representing a broader array of companies with a more diverse set of legal needs.”

Alya is the most recent addition to the Firm’s health practice, following the arrival of Washington-based FDA partner Heili Kim, as well as the arrival of healthcare fraud and abuse partner Denise Burke and senior counsel Lester Perling in June.

McDermott is the nation’s leading health law firm and the only health practice to receive top national rankings from U.S. News – Best Lawyers “Best Law Firms,” Chambers USA, The Legal 500 US and Law360. The practice was also recognized by Chambers as “Healthcare Team of the Year” in 2010, 2013, 2017, 2019 and 2022. McDermott has also held the top spot in PitchBook’s League Tables as the most active firm for healthcare private equity since 2017.
