Manatt Expands National Financial Services Litigation Practice With Addition of Leading Consumer Financial Services Litigator

Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP, announced that preeminent consumer financial services lawyer Richard E. Gottlieb has joined the firm’s Los Angeles office as a litigation and government enforcement partner in its multidisciplinary Financial Services practice. He comes to the firm from BuckleySandler LLP, where he was a partner.

Gottlieb is widely known as one of the country’s top consumer financial services litigators. He counsels and defends clients, including banks, mortgage lenders, servicers, finance companies, student lenders, marketplace and peer-to-peer lenders, retailers, insurers, and others, on a wide array of litigation and enforcement matters.

“We are excited by the synergies Richard’s joining Manatt creates,” said William T. Quicksilver, the firm’s CEO and managing partner. “In his vibrant practice he represents some of the biggest names in the financial services industry, many of which are existing Manatt clients. His addition further strengthens our Financial Services team of talented litigation, transactional and regulatory lawyers. Richard’s keen understanding of the disruption occurring in the evolving financial services industry, as well as its challenges and growth opportunities, greatly enhance Manatt’s strengths, not only in traditional litigation and government enforcement, but also in Fintech, technology and digital commerce.”

In addition to trial work, Gottlieb’s regulatory and enforcement practice includes representation of clients in both examination and enforcement proceedings. Gottlieb also provides ongoing regulatory and compliance advice to some of the world’s largest banks and financial services organizations.

“Richard literally wrote the book on consumer financial services law, and his addition to our litigation and government enforcement team is a value add for our combined client roster,” said Donna Wilson, co-chair of Manatt’s Financial Services Litigation group. Gottlieb’s treatise, “Consumer Financial Services Answer Book,” is published annually by the Practising Law Institute and is a standard desk reference for leading banks, mortgage lenders, credit card issuers and auto finance companies. Gottlieb serves as both lead editor and co-author of that publication.

“Manatt is known for its industry-leading work in a number of practices, but particularly in the banking and financial services sector,” Gottlieb said. “The team is acutely attuned to not only securing favorable outcomes for clients, but also to providing excellent client service and real value in their work. The bench of skilled litigators here is deep, and I look forward to working with them—none more so than my former partner, Donna Wilson, who joined Manatt in 2013. I am energized by the possibilities this platform provides.”

Highly regarded for his work, Gottlieb is recognized by Chambers USA as one of only 15 “Leading Lawyers” in the category of Financial Services Regulation: Consumer Finance Litigation. He is a fellow of the prestigious American College of Consumer Financial Services Lawyers and the American College of Mortgage Attorneys. Gottlieb is a prolific author, lecturer and commentator in the media on financial services, data privacy and other related issues. He has been a guest on both NBC Nightly News and National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered.”

Gottlieb earned his B.A. from Vanderbilt University, his J.D. from State University of New York and his LL.M. from Georgetown University.
