K&L Gates Adds Second London Energy Partner Since Start of March

Global law firm K&L Gates LLP continues to strengthen its energy, infrastructure and resources practice with the addition of energy partner James Douglass. Douglass, who arrives at K&L Gates from Baker Botts LLP, is the second new energy partner – and fourth partner overall – to join K&L Gates’ London office since March 1.

Douglass’ practice primarily focuses on power (conventional and renewables), oil & gas (liquefied natural gas, upstream, midstream, downstream), infrastructure, and resources. He also has substantial experience advising on project finance and other structured lending, as well as project and engineering, procurement, and construction contracts, M&A, and joint venture arrangements.

Douglass advises clients on complex high-value energy projects for many different market and legal environments, especially in emerging markets. He has deep experience in Asia, Africa, Russia, Central Asia, Turkey, the Middle East, Central and Eastern Europe, and Latin America and the Caribbean. Having lived and worked in Asia, Douglass possesses a particularly keen understanding of the requirements of Asian investors in their global energy projects.

Douglass commented: “I am pleased to be joining the K&L Gates energy, resources and infrastructure practice in London. Clients need advice in many international markets and increasingly in the transition to a low carbon economy. K&L Gates has a large international network in key growth markets and significant depth across the entire energy sector, particularly into the energy transition in areas such as hydrogen and low carbon electricity generation and procurement.”

“James’ energy projects practice connects with our funds and finance clients in addition to broadening and deepening our European and Middle East energy, power, and renewables capability with his vast experience,” said Tony Griffiths, K&L Gates’ managing partner for Europe and the Middle East. “We are delighted to welcome James to the firm.”

Douglass’ addition follows the arrivals of fellow energy partner Ben Holland, asset management and investment funds partner Daniel Greenaway, and investigations, enforcement and white collar partner Michael Ruck to the firm’s London office in recent weeks. The firm has welcomed more than 60 partners and of counsel since the beginning of 2020, including in the firm’s corporate; health care; tax; commercial litigation; energy, infrastructure and resources; environment, land and natural resources; asset management and investment funds; IP procurement and portfolio management; IP litigation; real estate; government contracts; and investigations, enforcement and white collar practices.

Jeremy Farr, co-leader of K&L Gates’ energy, infrastructure and resources practice area, stated: “We are very excited to have James join us in London. His practice will be immediately accretive to the firm and his skillset and experience will strengthen our ability to meet the considerable client demand we are experiencing for support with their energy projects globally, not least as they embrace new technologies, opportunities, and challenges.”

Lawyers in K&L Gates’ energy practice work with clients involved in every aspect of the global energy, infrastructure, and resources space through a variety of legal disciplines, including, among others, project development, finance, construction, energy and environmental regulation, government contracting, public policy, cross-border investment, acquisitions, and dispute resolution.
