Cooley Launches Patent Practice in London

Cooley has augmented its London-based IP capability with the addition of three patent practitioners who will found the firm’s UK patent practice. Joining Cooley are David Wraige, Jacqueline Ireland and Daniel Sellwood.

These additions from Mintz Levin’s London office follow on the April 2014 arrival in New York and Boston of life sciences patent partners Ivor Elrifi, the former co-chair of Mintz Levin’s IP practice, fellow partner Heidi Erlacher and their large and experienced team of attorneys and patent agents.

David Wraige is a European patent attorney, a UK chartered patent attorney, and a European Design Attorney qualified to practice at OHIM. Wraige advises clients in the UK and the US in regard to patent drafting, prosecution and EPO oppositions. He also provides freedom to operate and validity and infringement opinions. Wraige has experience across a wide range of mechanical engineering, electronics and software technologies including banknote processing, medical devices and imaging, relational databases and network-based computing, and semiconductor processing.

Jacqueline Ireland is a European patent attorney and a UK chartered patent attorney. Ireland’s technical background is in biochemistry and molecular genetics. She handles a wide variety of subject-matter within this field including DNA sequencing, nucleic acid assays, gene expression and inhibition, diagnostic tests, chimeric and therapeutic antibodies and polypeptides, and pharmaceuticals. Her work encompasses all aspects of patent practice including drafting, prosecuting, defending and attacking patents in EPO opposition and appeal proceedings, and providing infringement and validity opinions and freedom to operate analyses.

Daniel Sellwood is a UK‐qualified patent attorney and has broad experience in all aspects of European patent prosecution, drafting applications, opposition, portfolio management and foreign prosecution work. He advises clients in the life-sciences field handling subject-matter including drug delivery solutions, immunotherapeutics, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and assay technology.

Since opening in London in January 2015 with more than 50 attorneys, Cooley has added four partners to that office, including life sciences partners John Wilkinson and Nicola Maguire, who recently collaborated with a Cooley US team on Europe’s largest-ever private life sciences financing.
