McDermott Will & Emery has announced that it will launch an intellectual property practice in its Italian office in Rome. Heading the firm will be Francesco Mattina, who most recently worked at Roman boutique Gemma Mannino Mattina. Barely two years old, McDermott’s Roman office has grown to house 25 attorneys, including nine partners, and handles Italian corporate, tax and antitrust work.

Sheppard Mullin Richter & Hampton have hired Johnathan G. Rose and Sheldon M. Kline as partners for their Labor and Employment group in Washington DC. Heller Ehrman’s executive director Phyllis Gardner has retired. Gardner has often been credited by taking the old-fashioned firm into the modern era and was central to the firm’s growth in both size and revenue at the beginning of the millennium.
