White & Case has announced that it will open a new office in Abu Dhabi. Three associates from New York, two from London, and a local partner will staff the new office. The firms Allen & Overy, Ashurst and Herbert Smith have also recently opened offices in Abu Dhabi.

Former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue has rejoined law firm Covington & Burling. Tagliabue will work in both the New York and Washington DC offices of the firm and will practice communications and media law. He worked for Covington & Burling for 24 years before his 17 year stint with the NFL.

Connelly Sheehan Harris, a small Chicago-based firm, will merge with Philadelphia giant Drinker Biddle & Reath, both firms have announced. The move will benefit both parties, as Drinker Biddle has recently increased its Midwestern presence, particularly in Chicago. Partners at Connelly Sheehan are merely happy that they will get to spend more time with clients and less time on business matters.

Knobbe, Martens, Olson & Bear has announced the opening of a new office in Washington, DC, its first office outside of the state of California. William Zimmerman, previously a litigation partner at the firm’s Orange County office, will head the new branch. The firm plans to expand the office to ten to fifteen attorneys over the next year.

Vinson & Elkins also has an office in Dubai, making it the first American firm to have offices in both Middle Eastern legal centers. London energy partner Lewis Jones will move to Abu Dhabi to head the office as an administrative partner.

There will be no merger between New York firm Chadbourne & Parke and London Firm Watson Farley, as had previously been in talks. The cause of the cancellation is rumored to be apprehension on the part of Chadbourne & Parke partners, who held a meeting earlier this month to discuss the details of the upcoming union.
