Word is out that Vinson & Elkins is looking to launch in Saudi Arabia.  The firm has offices nearby in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.  In Saudi Arabi, an international firm must first sign up with a local lawyer to be allowed to open an office there.  There is no word of with whom the US firm is in discussion.

A&O Takes on Capital Markets Partner in London

Allen & Overy has added to its presence in London with its latest lateral from Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom.  Robert Williams, a capital markets partner, is boosting the US-UK transactional practice.  The news of Williams comes after the addition of partner Kevin Muzilla from Milbank Tweed Hadley & McCloy.

Bill Clinton’s Friend and Notable Reporter Land at McDernitt Will & Emery

McDermott Will & Emery have gained former White House special counsel, Lanny Davis and distinguished journalist, Eileen O’Connor.   Both leave firm Herrington & Sutcliffe, where they led the legal, strategic and crisis management practice.   Davis is a friend and supporter of former President Bill Clinton.  O’Connor spent almost a quarter of a century working as a reporter for ABC News and CNN.

Jones Day Looses Partner in Tokyo

Jones Day has lost a partner in Tokyo.  Tadakatsu Sano resigned for the firm two weeks ago because he is set to be the newest chief executive assistant to Yukio Hatoyama , Japan’s new Prime Minister.  Sano joined Jones Day three years ago.  Prior to that, he was vice minister for international affairs in Japan’s Ministry of Economy, trade, and Industry.

Kirkland & Ellis Launches New Banking Practice with Lateral Partner

Kirkland & Ellis has announced that the firm is launching a banking practice.  Edwin del Hierro is leaving Barack Ferrazzano Kirschbaum & Nagelberg to join Kirkland & Ellis and run the new practice.  The firm has most likely based the decision on the economic downfall and its effects on banks (closing and the calls for regulation).

Patton Boggs Hires Ex-FCC

Patton Boggs has hired the former chair of the Federal Communications Commission, Kevin Martin.  Martin will start in the beginning of October as co-chair of the telecommunications policy practice.  He was made chairman of the FCC in 2005 and left in January of this year.
