Two partners have left Linklaters for its Indian friend firm, Talwar Thakore & Associates (TTA). Narayan Iyer, a project finance partner, joins from Singapore and corporate partner, Kunal Thakore, joins from Hong Kong. They are both equity partners at their new firm.

The Manhattan prosecutor who won the case against Bernard Madoff with the maximum punishment of 150 years is joining Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton. Lev Dassin will be based in the firm’s New York office. He will focus his practice on white-collar crime and enforcement cases, as well as commercial civil litigation.

SJ Berwin has laid off partners due to the economy. The firm did not offer a specific number but instead said that “less than 6” partners were let go. It would appear that the firm is not done with its review and more partners may be asked to leave.

A group of five Land Use Lawyers have left the Los Angeles office of Allen Matkins Leck Gamble Mallory & Natsis for Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton. Land Use Chairman Jarold Neuman led the group and brought along partner Michael Kiely. The three associates who made the jump are: Alfred Fraijo Jr., Claudia Gutierrez and Phillip Tate.

Norton Rose has started the process of making its staff full-time once again. The first mention of the part-time plan was mentioned in March of this year with the aim to save jobs. The firm believes to have saved about 85 jobs all-together. Norton Rose estimates that the number of part-time workers has reduced by 15%. Many of the new full-time employees are in the corporate and banking departments.

Kaye Scholer is allowing half of its deferred first-year associates to do pro-bono work for a reduction in salary. 20 new lawyers have entered into this agreement and will be paid $60,000 for their efforts. While Kaye Scholer decided to keep its associates close, many firms who have delayed first-years offered the option to work at non-profits for a stipend.

Dykema Gossett P.L.L.C. has conducted a survey about the merger and acquisitions market in the U.S. The survey illustrates that industry authorities are much more hopeful about the state and future of the market. Last year, about 50 percent of the survey takers predicted that it would be weak for the next 12 months. In the 2009 survey, 81 percent predict that the M&A market will be neutral or improve immensely over the next year.
