Covington & Burling has opened its first office in Asia, residing in Beijing. The firm’s previous management chair, Stuart Stock, will head the team. Stuart will be accompanied by senior lawyers Ellen Eliasoph and Cao Yu. The former is former Warner Bros Exective, and the latter was a partner at a Chinese Firm Haiwen & Partners. The Beijing office is Covington & Burling’s 6th firm.

Patton Boggs Is Spreading in the Middle East

Patton Boggs is making itself know in the Middle East. The firm has launched an office Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Although Patton has worked in Abu Dhabi for thirty years, this is the beginning of having resident lawyers in the city. The office will also be working with the firm’s other Middle Eastern offices, inlcuding those in Dubai and Doha, Qatar. The Abu Dhabi office will provide legal service in a number of practice groups, including: private capital and investment funds; banking and financial institutions; international business transactions; construction, infrastructure and real estate; Islamic finance; and litigation and dispute resolution.

Who Would Like to Merge With Thelen Reid ?

In response to the many who have left Thelen Reid Brown Raysman & Steiner, the firm has announced its desire to merge with another firm. Thelen reportedly has yet to advance beyond this step 1 of acknowledgment, and has yet to make any further steps. McKee Nelson Launches New “Covered Bonds” Team

The law firm of McKee Nelson has launched a new team whose primary focus in on “covered bonds”. This type of bond is one that is sponsored by a bank, and which if defaulted, is maintained by a group of loans or receivables. Covered bonds are more common in Europe, but the US is catching up. The team is part of the structured finance practice group, and is led by Washington partner John Arnolz and New York partner Kenneth P. Martin.

The Greenberg Traurig Tampa office boosts its litigation practice with the addition of two new associates, Richard J. Mockler and Don Crawford. A New Firm in Town For Las Vegas

Christensen, Glaser, Fink, Jacobs, Weil & Shapiro, LLP, who launched a new office in Las Vegas in mid January, just now has staffed a full office. The office has reached 8 lawyers: four from Snell & Wilmer and two from Lionel Sawyer & Collins. Managing partner, Jim Mace, left Snell & Wilmer to open the office.
