SEC Takes One From Wilmer

The SEC has hired Meredith Cross as director of the commission’s division of corporate finance.  Cross was most recently a corporate partner with Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr.  She has been with the firm for over ten years.

Fred Fielding Joins Morgan Lewis

Fred Fielding, previously White House counsel for Bush, has decided to join Morgan Lewis & Bockius.  Fielding starts April 15 in the firm’s litigation practice as a partner. Before joining the Bush administration, Fielding was a name partner at Wiley Rein.

Morris Manning Branches Out into Beijing

Morris Manning has the distinction of being the first Atlanta-based law firm to open an office in Beijing.  Troutman Sanders, a firm which also originated in Atlanta, has offices in Shanghai and Hong Kong, but not in Beijing.  Morris Manning has five offices in Georgia, one of each in the following: North Carolina, Washington, Taipei and now one in Beijing.

Schiff Hardin is Roughing it to Keep Everyone On

Schiff Hardin LLP has cut down on extra expenses by taking action, while avoiding job cuts.  The firm announced that it is canceling various company gatherings, such as holiday parties and picnics.  Schiff has enacted an early retirement program, as and has also cancelled health benefits.  This is all done in an effort to stay afloat during these economic hard times while minimizing layoffs or denying them all together.

Linklaters Adds Lewis Steinberg

Linklaters has added Lewis Steinberg, previously with UBS’s investment banking group.  Steinberg was managing director and global head of strategic solutions group at UBS, and will now be Linklaters US co-head, as well as head of the firm’s tax practice.  Prior to joining UBS, he was a partner at Cravath Swaine & Moore.

Ex-White House Counsel Joins Anrold & Porter

John Bellinger III is joining Arnold & Porter as a partner starting April 13.  He has served in the George W. Bush administration.  He spent those 8 years as a senior associate White House counsel.  The last time Bellinger worked at a law firm, was 16 years ago when he worked at Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr.  He will work out of the Washington office.

Patton Boggs Makes Three Bankruptcy Partner Hire

Foley & Lardner has lost three partners from its bankruptcy practice to Patton Boggs.  Michael Richman, the former firm’s bankruptcy foreman is now destined to chair Patton’s bankruptcy practice.  He will be based out of the New York office, while partners Mark Salzberg and Erika Morabito will be stationed out of the Washington office.

More Wolf Block Laterals

Two firms have stepped forward and taken in lawyers from Wolf Block, soon to be non-existent.  Duane Morris hired 24 of its attorneys and 30 went to Cozen O’Connor.  More than half of Wolf Block’s 290 attorneys have relocated to new firms only a mere two weeks after the firm announced its closing.
