Herbert Smith’s New Office and New Attorneys

Herbert Smith has plans to open an office in Madrid and has convinced three partners from Linklaters in Madrid to help.  Alvaro Sainz, an M&A restructuring partner, Miguel Riaño, an energy and infrastructure specialist, and Ignacio Paz a specialist in Administration Law will all be moving from Linklaters to Herbies.  Finance partner David Wyles, will relocate to Madrid from Herbert Smith’s London office to help launch the new office.

Duane Morris Adds Nanette Heide in New York

Duane Morris has added Nanette C. Heide to its corporate finance department.  Heide is the 26th lawyer to join Duane Morris’ New York office since December.  She was previously a partner at Seyfarth Shaw LLP.  Heide received her J.D. from the Washington and Lee University School of Law in 1990.

Simmons & Simmons May Outsource Legal Jobs

Simmons & Simmons is considering a plan to outsource legal work to lawyers in India, South Africa or Australia. Partners will vote this week on this issue and the firm, as the world, will soon know the outcome. Simmons & Simmons is the first major firm to consider using lawyers abroad. Other firms, such as Clifford Chance and Lovells, have only outsourced paralegal and support work. The firm would most likely save 50 percent on each position that is outsourced. What would not be saved are the people who currently have those positions.

Gardere Wins a New Partner

Gardere Wynne Sewell LLP has acquired a new partner. Hoang Quan Vu joins the firm’s Banking group in Houston. Vu received his JD from Harvard Law School in 1995. He graduated magna cum laude from Harvard’s undergraduate program in 1992.

Gardere Hires Talented Litigation Group For Houston

2009 Law School Rankings

The 2010 law school rankings (obviously ranked in 2009) were recently released by U.S. News & World Report.  The results do not outstandingly differ from last year’s, but there are some changes to take note.  Yale kept its No. 1 spot, while Harvard squeezed Standford Law out of the slot No. 2 they shared last year.  Duke made it into the top 10 by climbing two ranks, thus tying with Northwestern University and University of Virginia School of Law.  To review the list, please click on the following link:  http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com.

Sheppard, Mullin Goes on Hiring Spree

The law firm of Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton has been on a hiring spree.  Not only have the firm hired Brian Weimer from Latham & Watkins, but also Pamela Westhoff, a partner from DLA Piper. Earlier in April, Sheppard hired a partner from O’Melveny & Myers, Todd Bissett.  Sheppard Mullin chairman, Guy Halgren, wrote that the firm will be adding a “marquee partners and groups”.

David M. “Max” Williamson Picks Andrews Kurth
