The global law firm Jones Day is pleased to announce that Dr. Olga Bezzubova has joined the Firm as a partner in the Intellectual Property Practice in the Munich Office beginning on September 1. Prior to joining Jones Day, Dr. Bezzubova was a member of the Biotechnology team at the German IP boutique firm Uexküll & Stolberg. She has extensive experience in all aspects of IP rights with a focus on prosecuting and opposing biotechnology and pharmacology patents before the European and German Patent Offices.

McDermott Receives Approval to Open in South Korea

McDermott Will & Emery announced today that it has received approval from South Korea’s Ministry of Justice to open an office in Seoul. With this approval, the Firm will become one of the first Western law firms to expand its network into South Korea. The Firm has secured office in the Mirae Asset Center 1 Building in downtown Seoul and expects to open for business in a matter of days.

Simpson Thacher Represents Initial Purchasers in $450 Million Senior Notes Offering by Air Lease Corporation

Simpson Thacher represented the initial purchasers, led by J.P. Morgan, in connection with the offering by Air Lease Corporation of $450 million aggregate principal amount of 4.500% Senior Notes due 2016. The offering was conducted pursuant to Rule 144A and Regulation S. The net proceeds of the offering will be used to fund the acquisition of commercial aircraft and for other general corporate purposes.

Simpson Thacher Represents Celulosa Arauco in its Acquisition of Leading North American Wood Panel Manufacturer

Simpson Thacher represented Celulosa Arauco y Constitución S.A., a Chilean corporation, in its purchase of all of the shares of Flakeboard Company Limited, a Canadian company which owns and operates seven production facilities in the United States and Canada and is the largest producer of composite wood panels in North America. The transaction value including assumed debt was approximately US$434.7 million. The transaction closed on September 24, 2012.

Arnold & Porter Represents Republic of Turkey in Its First Islamic Bond Offering

The Republic of Turkey has closed its first-ever Islamic finance offering. The New York and London offices of Arnold & Porter LLP acted as Turkey’s international legal counsel, in association with Somay Hukuk Burosu, the Republic’s Turkish counsel. The issue, consisting of lease certificates due in 2018, raised $1.5 billion for the Republic.

Davis Polk – Korea Finance Corporation Notes Offering

Davis Polk advised Citigroup Global Markets Inc., Credit Suisse Securities (USA) LLC, UBS AG, Hong Kong Branch as underwriters in connection with a Schedule B debt offering by Korea Finance Corporation of $300 million in aggregate principal amount of its 2.25% notes due 2017. The notes are consolidated and form a single class of notes with the $500 million aggregate principal amount of 2.25% notes due 2017 issued on August 7, 2012.
