U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom Joins Polsinelli, Strengthens National White Collar Defense and Government Investigations Practice

Polsinelli welcomes well-known U.S. Attorney for the District of Kansas and legal industry veteran Barry R. Grissom as shareholder to its Kansas City headquarters office. Grissom brings a deep bench of experience in government and private practice to Polsinelli’s national White Collar Defense and Government Investigations and Compliance – Civil and Criminal Practice.

“Polsinelli’s reputation for excellence, combined with its entrepreneurial spirit, clearly drew me to the firm,” said Grissom. “I’m particularly excited by Polsinelli’s national footprint, which will enable me to deploy my skillset nationwide.”

Grissom was appointed U.S. Attorney for the District of Kansas by President Barack Obama in 2010. As U.S. Attorney, he assessed and resolved a wide array of civil and criminal cases, managed three offices and a large legal workforce of 49 Assistant U.S. Attorneys and 53 support staff, while representing the Department of Justice in diverse communities across his district. Grissom’s law enforcement priorities included national security, violent crime, drug trafficking, financial fraud and crimes against children.

As U.S. Attorney, Grissom was selected by Attorney General Eric Holder to serve as one of 15 members on the Attorney’s General Advisory Committee (AGAC), which advises the Attorney General on matters of administration and policy. As a member of the AGAC, Grissom contributed to efforts to reform the federal criminal justice system through his Smart on Crime initiative. He also served on several sub-committees, including Financial Fraud, Health Care Fraud Prevention & Enforcement Team, Terrorism & National Security (Cyber), Native American Issues and Civil Rights.

Prior to his work as U.S. Attorney, Grissom was in private practice law for 27 years in both state and federal court, with involvement at every level of complex government litigation matters. He has experience leading white collar criminal prosecutions and affirmative civil lawsuits, prosecuting complex white collar crime cases involving financial, securities, health care and related industries, crisis management and regulatory enforcement matters.

“We are very pleased that Barry has chosen Polsinelli. He brings tremendous experience as U.S. Attorney and nearly 30 years as a practicing attorney, which will allow him to make an immediate impact on our growing national White Collar & Internal Investigations practice and bring great insight to our clients,” said Polsinelli Chairman Russ Welsh.

At Polsinelli, Grissom will focus his practice on the representation of corporations and their leadership in criminal prosecutions, grand jury investigations, corporate internal investigations and civil enforcement actions brought by state and federal regulatory agencies. He will also handle False Claims Act enforcement and Class Action claims.

Grissom earned a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Kansas before obtaining his law degree from Oklahoma City University School of Law, where he was a member of the Law Review and Moot Court Board.

The addition of Grissom strengthens Polsinelli’s growing national Government Investigations and Compliance – Civil and Criminal Practice, comprised of other U.S. Attorneys, former federal prosecutors and government regulators. This group of attorneys provides a wide range of services including: internal investigations, white collar defense, professional board investigations, customs enforcement, environmental and health care matters, commercial litigation and more.
