Jonathan R. Spivey Joins Polsinelli as Shareholder in Houston Office

Am Law 100 firm Polsinelli is enhancing its Houston footprint with the addition of Shareholder Jonathan R. Spivey in the firm’s Intellectual Property (IP) Litigation practice. Spivey’s experience includes complex patent, trade secret, trademark, copyright and unfair competition litigation and appeals, all of which complement and strengthen Polsinelli’s robust IP practice in Houston. Spivey joins Polsinelli from Bracewell LLP in Houston.

“Jonathan is an accomplished, well-respected attorney in the IP space, and we are thrilled to welcome him to our team,” said Tracy Druce, managing partner of Polsinelli’s Houston office and vice chair of the firm’s Intellectual Property Department. “His deep understanding of nuanced, sophisticated IP litigation and his ability to stay at the forefront of these rapidly evolving legal areas will prove to be a tremendous asset to our clients when they are faced with these types of important issues.”

With more than two decades of experience, Spivey joins Polsinelli from a global law firm where he litigated IP matters in numerous district courts involving patent, trademark and copyright infringement, internet domain disputes, mergers and acquisitions, and patent prosecution. He has represented clients across a range of industries in dealing with complex technology issues, including those pertaining to electro-mechanical, electrical computer technology, wireless communication, video coding and decoding, and software arts. Spivey also provides counsel to clients in the strategic development of their IP portfolios. Spivey has experience as a patent examiner at the United States Patent and Trademark Office and has served as a judicial clerk for the Honorable H. Robert Mayer, former chief judge at the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.

“Our robust IP Department, which is one of the country’s largest of its kind, is further elevated with the addition of Jonathan,” said Patrick Woolley, chair of Polsinelli’s national IP Department. “He is exceptionally capable of advising existing and future clients on their most mission-critical business needs. Adding a first chair litigator of Jonathan’s stature was important to our brand and business goals in Houston and across the US.”

In addition to his IP practice, Spivey is one of the original founders of the Richard Linn American Inn of Court and past program chair of The Honorable Nancy F. Atlas Intellectual Property American Inn of Court. He is a member of the Texas Bar Foundation, Federal Circuit Bar Association, American Intellectual Property Law Association and National Society of Black Engineers. In recognition of his legal acumen, he was named a Texas Super Lawyer from 2015 to 2018.

“I’m excited to be part of Polsinelli’s highly regarded IP practice and thriving Houston office,” said Spivey. “I am well-positioned to draw upon my diverse legal background, as well as my experience as a patent examiner, to help the firm support its current clients and build relationships with new clients.”

Spivey earned his LL.M. from The George Washington University Law School and completed his J.D., cum laude, at the Thurgood Marshall School of Law. He previously earned his B.S. in electrical engineering from Prairie View A&M University.
