Energy Partner Matthew Kapinos Joins Akin Gump in Houston

Akin Gump today announced that Matthew A. Kapinos has joined the firm as a partner in its energy practice in Houston. He comes to Akin Gump from McGuireWoods, where he was deputy head of its energy industry team.

Mr. Kapinos has been recognized for his work around project development, acquisitions, divestitures and strategic joint ventures encompassing a range of energy assets from upstream to midstream, liquefied natural gas (LNG), and traditional and renewable power, as well as related engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) matters.

“With significant experience in energy infrastructure matters as well as broader projects work, Matt further solidifies our standing as a go-to firm in the traditional and renewable power sectors,” said Akin Gump chairperson Kim Koopersmith. “His background and skills align perfectly with the needs of our clients, not just in the energy space but in our private equity and financial restructuring practices as well.”

Mr. Kapinos focuses his practice on assisting clients in all phases of drafting and negotiating agreements for the purchase, sale, development and financing of energy infrastructure and construction projects. In addition to those in the energy industry, he works with clients in the private equity and infrastructure fund spaces.

“Matt’s experience with EPC matters as well as renewables, where traditional energy companies are increasingly seeking to expand their presence, will be a key differentiator for us,” said Christine B. LaFollette, partner in charge of Akin Gump’s Houston office. “He also brings a solid background in downstream work that will resonate strongly with our clients. It is great to have Matt on our team.”

Added Mr. Kapinos, “I was drawn to Akin Gump by the strengths I’ve seen across its oil and gas, project development and project finance practices, as well as its strong commitment to the Houston market. The firm’s broad platform will permit me to expand the work I am able to do on behalf of clients, and I am very excited to be here.”
