Former Michigan Solicitor General Joins Barnes & Thornburg In Grand Rapids

Aaron Lindstrom, the former solicitor general for the state of Michigan, has joined Barnes & Thornburg in Grand Rapids.

Lindstrom, who is of counsel in the firm’s Litigation Department, served as Michigan’s solicitor general for five years, where he represented the state and its agencies and oversaw appellate matters for the Michigan Department of Attorney General. He represented the state before the Michigan Supreme Court and the U.S. Supreme Court and before other state and federal courts.

“As the state’s chief appellate lawyer, Aaron earned the reputation as a leader in appellate advocacy and has demonstrated impressive focus and skills in the courtroom,” said Robert Stead, Grand Rapids managing partner. “He has an unwavering service mindset; the combination of his credentials and deep knowledge and experience in the public and private sectors will be invaluable to our clients.”

Earlier in his career, Lindstrom practiced in the Washington, D.C., office of a global AmLaw 20 law firm and then in the Grand Rapids office of a Michigan law firm. He has successfully represented a wide range of clients – states, countries, Fortune 100 companies, law firms, and individuals – in complex litigation cases at virtually all levels of state and federal courts, spanning numerous areas of law, including administrative, constitutional, contract, criminal, environmental and tax. His experience includes 13 cases on the merits at the U.S. Supreme Court, twice presenting oral argument. He was also counsel of record on more than 90 U.S. Supreme Court briefs and argued 15 times before the Michigan Supreme Court.

Lindstrom, a West Point graduate, served for five years in the U.S. Army and attained the rank of captain while assigned to the Second Squadron, Third Armored Cavalry Regiment, in Fort Carson, Colorado. He held a top-secret clearance and served in the regiment as an armor officer.

“Aaron advises on complex appeals and is known for delivering arguments with precision and strength,” said D. Randall Brown, chair of Barnes & Thornburg’s Litigation Department. “He’s an outstanding addition to our team of litigators representing clients involved in high-stakes matters in courts across the country.”

Lindstrom received his J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School, where he served as the editor of the Chicago Journal of International Law and as a national symposium board editor of the Harvard Journal of Law & Public Policy. He also clerked for the Hon. Jeffrey S. Sutton of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. He has been recognized as an award-winning writer by the National Association of Attorneys General and the Western Michigan University-Cooley Law Review.
