Troutman Sanders Adds FCPA and Corporate Compliance Partner in D.C. Office

Troutman Sanders LLP has expanded the firm’s White Collar and Government Investigations practice with the addition of partner Sharie A. Brown, who will be resident in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office.

Brown has an established reputation for her work representing clients in the areas of corporate compliance, ethics and governance, as well as the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), USA Patriot Act, and trade sanctions laws and regulations. Regulatory and enforcement activity in these areas has increased significantly in recent years.

“Sharie greatly expands our FCPA and anticorruption practice through her insightful representation of numerous U.S. and non-U.S. companies over the years on enforcement issues, internal and government investigations, merger and acquisition due diligence, and compliance with U.S. and other extraterritorial laws,” said William N. Withrow, a partner and Litigation Section Chief at Troutman Sanders. “Her extensive experience in the U.S. and around the world will be valued by clients operating in challenging global legal and regulatory environments.”

Brown has conducted internal investigations, compliance audits and transactional due diligence in every region of the world, not only with regard to the FCPA, but also the Dodd-Frank whistleblower program, the UK Bribery Act, OFAC compliance and export controls, corporate ethics and compliance, World Bank procurement fraud, the Economic Espionage Act, and the USA Patriot Act anti-money laundering requirements.

She joins Troutman Sanders from DLA Piper, where she served as Co-Chair of the firm’s FCPA, Anti-Corruption and Corporate Compliance Practice Group. Prior to that, she chaired the White Collar Defense & Corporate Compliance Group at Foley & Lardner LLP. Before that, while working as an ethics and compliance officer at Mobil Oil Corporation’s Office of General Counsel, Brown developed a worldwide ethics and compliance program. Earlier in her career, she was an Assistant United States Attorney in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, and a law clerk for U.S. District Court Judge Richard M. Bilby.

“Sharie brings a high level of sophistication and informed judgment to her client work, having served as a federal prosecutor, a compliance and ethics officer at a Fortune 10 corporation, and as a leader of white collar and compliance practices at two major law firms,” said Amie V. Colby, Managing Partner of Troutman Sanders’ Washington, D.C. office. “We are very pleased that Sharie will be joining our Washington, D.C. office and expanding the depth and breadth of our corporate compliance, government litigation, and internal investigations experience.”

Brown has been recognized for her significant work in the areas of ethics, compliance and internal investigations. She is an elected Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America and was named in 2009 to Ethisphere Council’s FCPA “Attorneys Who Matter,” as well as the “Distinguished Attorneys” of the National Bar Association’s Greater Washington Area Chapter Women Lawyer’s Division. She received her undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Pennsylvania, and her law degree from Georgetown University Law Center.

“What attracted me to Troutman Sanders was the firm’s intense focus on high quality, value-added service for its domestic and international client base. Also, since many of my clients are international, I think it is important that Troutman Sanders has demonstrated experience representing non-U.S. clients, including state-owned and controlled companies,” said Brown. “The firm has a long, storied history; a friendly and collaborative culture; and has been recognized for delivering innovative, results-oriented, and cost-effective legal solutions to its clients.”
