Workman Nydegger, a premier intellectual property law firm, is pleased to welcome Justin J. Cassell as a new equity shareholder. Prior to coming to Workman Nydegger, Mr. Cassell worked as a partner for Bacon & Thomas, PLLC, a Virginia based intellectual property law firm.
Mr. Cassell counsels clients in all areas of United States patent practice, ranging from patent procurement to opinion preparation to licensing. He has written many patent applications in close cooperation with inventors and actively participates in the management of patent portfolios of companies. He helps clients evaluate inventions in the context of business objectives and applies his extensive prosecution experience to develop internal patent procurement strategies and procedures for clients. He routinely handles applications received from abroad in the United States, as well as filing applications in international patent offices directly and in accordance with the International Patent Cooperation Treaty.
Mr. Cassell also counsels clients on patent validity and infringement. He has written numerous opinions to defend clients against charges of willful patent infringement, and has negotiated with opposing counsel about such patents. In addition, he regularly advises clients about infringement risks during the design process and has coordinated clearance studies requiring the evaluation of competitor patents. Mr. Cassell’s technical areas of emphasis include business methods, computers and software, electro-mechanical systems, materials engineering, mechanical engineering, medical devices and procedures.
Mr. Cassell graduated from George Washington University Law School (J.D. 2001) and Brigham Young University (B.S. Mechanical Engineering 1997). He is currently admitted to practice in Virginia and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
